Smithsonian Institution Participation in U.S. Department of Education Teaching American History Grants

Thank you for your interest in including the Smithsonian in your US Department of Education Teaching American History grant. We are dedicated to the development of effective and innovative teaching methods and to the transmission of knowledge through critical thinking and analysis of primary sources.

We know that selecting the right partnership combination is very important to the success of your grant. If you are interested in having the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies be a part of your TAH grant proposal, please send an email to cflanagan@si.edu, Attn: TAH Grant Inquiry.

The Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies (SCEMS) is the central office of education at the Smithsonian Institution. We work collaboratively with museums, research centers, and other units of the Smithsonian to provide quality programming. Our approach includes an emphasis on object-based and inquiry-driven learning.

Since 2000, we have been involved in a wide variety of Teaching American History grant programs. Our participation has included providing intensive training for all 4th and 5th grade teachers in one school district, consulting on curriculum development in several districts and providing educator-led tours of specific exhibits for many others. We have provided school districts from Arizona to New Hampshire with programs tailored to fit their specific grant structure and goals. Smithsonian TAH programs have ranged from 1-hour presentations to multi-day institutes, with costs varying accordingly. Our staff will work with you to develop a quality program for the participants.

Please visit the U.S. Department of Education website for information regarding grant guidelines and deadlines.
