May I take photographs in the National Gallery of Australia?

Please be aware that for copyright and conservation reasons the National Gallery of Australia does not permit the use of photographic devices (digital, video, film or mobile phone cameras), with or without flash, inside the Gallery.

Visitors to the Gallery are permitted to photograph or film works of art on public display in the Gallery’s Sculpture Garden.

Conservation risks

Light from camera flashbulbs contributes significantly to the deterioration of works of art. The damage caused is cumulative and permanent, greatly reducing the life span of a work of art.

Copyright risks

While the Gallery owns the physical works of art in the collection, in the majority of cases, the artist/copyright holder retains the copyright and therefore the exclusive right to reproduce a work of art. There may also be works on display at the Gallery that are on loan from other collections and for which photography is not permitted as part of the loan conditions.

Copyright holders may wish to bring action against infringers who choose to disregard the legislation. Penalties for not adhering to these conditions may lead to severe penalties including fines of up to $60,500 or imprisonment, depending on the severity of the offence.

Art Reproduction

The National Gallery of Australia encourages the reproduction  of works of art from its collection. However, to ensure the integrity of the reproductions is maintained, publishers are required to comply with certain terms and conditions.
