Otagaki Rengetsu, Lotus Moon, was a Japanese Buddhist nun whose tragic life inspired extraordinary creativity.
One of a small number of prominent female artists of 19th-century Japan, Rengetsu was a poet, calligrapher, potter and painter whose work reflects the beauty of the imperfect and unconventional.

Members: 'An afternoon with the blue god'
15 September 2.30 pm
The story of the blue-faced god, Krishna, is still depicted by artists in India today. Voluntary guides who recently studied in India look at Krishna images in the Indian Gallery and the Collection Study Room. Wearing traditional costume, the guides will then host a Raj style high tea in the Rooftop Lounge Bookings essential $18 members and their guests (includes a glass of sparkling wine)

'Big draw: drawing on the move'

Come and draw the distinctive architecture and inspirational works of art in the Gallery. A national drawing event held in conjunction with the National Portrait Gallery and Drawing Australia. Free event

New Aquisitions

The National Gallery of Australia is delighted to unveil the recently acquired Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri painting Warlugulong 1977. This highly significant work of art was acquired for $2.4 million as part of the 25th Anniversary Gifts Program and is one of several major acquisitions celebrating the National Gallery of Australia’s 25th Anniversary.
