Eugene von Guérard |
|
In 1862 Eugene von Guérard joined an expedition to the remote and relatively unexplored Australian Alps led by the renowned German scientist Georg von Neumayer. During the ascent, von Guérard made a number of sketches, recording the views in all directions, which became the basis for this painting completed in the following year. North-east View from the Northern Top of Mount Kosciusko continues
the German Romantic tradition of landscape painting: setting the tiny
figures against the awe- inspiring vista of the mountains — man’s
insignificance contrasted with the vast grandeur of God’s creation.
