The Barbara Blackman Temenos Foundation brings to Australia leading international experts in art, architecture, literature and philosophy to discuss the spiritual principles of their chosen areas of scholarship.
Jack Herbert, Fellow of the Temenos Academy, London will place Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), the most widely acclaimed German painter of the Romantic period, in a social and cultural context and make connections with other aspects of Romanticism.

Compositions by Steve Reich performed amongst the works of Sol LeWitt featuring musicians from the School of Music, National Institute of the Arts, ANU.
As part of the public program of events for the exhibition Sol LeWitt: Drawings, Prints and Books 1968-1988, the National Gallery of Australia presents Music of the New York Minimalist School. Two works by minimalist composer Steve Reich will be performed in an exhibition of works by minimalist visual artist Sol LeWitt.

Four of Australia's most innovative architects discuss the themes, issues and influences in their work, and provide an insight into their working process and design philosophy. The series highlights each architect's response to the Australian landscape, urban development and the changing needs and lifestyles of Australians.

purchases Indonesian textile treasures

The Director of the National Gallery of Australia, Dr Brian Kennedy, today announced the major acquisition of Asian textiles from the collection of Robert J. Holmgren and Anita E. Spertus. Purchased over three years at a cost of $6.5 million, the acquisition of more than 400 rare and ancient textiles from the internationally renowned collection represents the National Gallery's biggest investment in Southeast Asian art.
Sol LeWitt: Drawings, Prints and Books 1968 - 1988
The National Gallery of Australia has opened the first extensive Australian exhibition of drawings, prints and books by prominent American artist Sol LeWitt (born 1928). Dr Anthony White, co-curator of the exhibition and the Gallery's Curator of International Painting and Sculpture, says the NGA has the largest public collection of LeWitt's work in Australia. 'This exhibition provides Australian viewers with a unique opportunity to see the full breadth of Sol LeWitt's work from the late 1960s to the 1980s.

exhibition to visit Papua New Guinea

The National Gallery of Australia's Program of Travelling Exhibitions is visiting Papua New Guinea for the first time, with Islands in the Sun, a visually uplifting collection of prints by artists from Arnhem Land, Torres Strait Islands, Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
Negus talks Italy, politics and pizza
George Negus will be visiting the National Gallery of Australia on Tuesday 30 April at 6pm for a pizza supper at which he will talk about his recent book The World from Italy. Publishers of his book HarperCollins say he will provide "some thought provoking and challenging insights on how the world works today and how, despite their mad rush to nowhere in particular, the Italians still manage to go their own wonderful way."

The Italians: three centuries of Italian art
