Works in the National Gallery of Australia are part of Australia's national collection, they belong to the people of Australia and are preserved and exhibited for Australians and people throughout the world. The collection not only showcases the great diversity and richness of Australian artistic culture but also holds international works of great value.

As an individual, group or organisation everyone can provide a lasting contribution to the national collection. Your contribution can take place in a number of ways:

How to donate
The Gallery has acquired many significant works of art with funds provided through donations. Gifts can be made either to the National Gallery of Australia or through the National Gallery of Australia Foundation.

25th Anniversary gift program
The National Gallery of Australia’s 25th Anniversary Gift Program has the objective of raising $25 million from 2006 to 2008 to assist with the further development of the national collection. The program includes gifts of cash, gifts of works of art, pledges, sponsorships, notified and actual bequests.

Masterpieces for the Nation 2008
The Masterpieces of the Nation Fund was initiated in 2003 to give the public an opportunity to play a special role in the collection of significant works of art. Since 2003 the Gallery has been able to purchase several important works through this fund and is again offering the opportunity to be part of the acquisition of a selection of key works

Treasure a textile
The National Gallery of Australia holds one of the finest Asian textile collections in the world. Conserving textiles for display and to stabilise their condition is a time consuming and specialised task.

Bequests
Bequests to the Gallery, of whatever size, assist to strengthen and develop the national art collection. These gifts stand as a lasting tribute to the generosity and vision of the Gallery's benefactors.

Gifts of works of art
Honor art lovers' birthdays, anniversaries, or special occasions with a thoughtful tribute. Donations of works of art to the National Gallery of Australia may be given under the Cultural Gifts Program, which encourages gifts of significant cultural items to public art galleries by offering donors a tax deduction for the market value of their gifts.

Foundation
Foundation is the Gallery’s major acquisition fund and umbrella organisation for all Gallery benefactor groups. By joining the Gallery’s Foundation you can become a benefactor, supporting the expansion of the collection or one of the Gallery’s other vital resources such as the Library or Conservation departments.

American Friends of the Australian National Gallery

In the early 1980’s L. Gordon Darling AC approached a small number of prominent Americans in New York who had links and friendships with Australians. He sought their help to support and enrich the National Gallery’s collection of art. The result was the creation of the American Friends of the Australian National Gallery (AFANG). Although the Gallery is now known as the National Gallery of Australia, the acronym AFANG has been retained.
