PES 2009: Online is "top priority"

We won't make the same mistakes as last year, Seabass tells CVG
With just one week to go now until Pro Evolution Soccer 2009's release, the annual FIFA versus PES war is warming up nicely and we recently caught up with legendary series creator Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka at the PES European finals.

One key battleground this year will be the online component of both games and while Seabass conceded that PES 2008's online performance was perhaps more Conference level than Champions League, this year he's promising big things.

Seabass said, "I do acknowledge that last year we placed such emphasis on the controls that the online side was sacrificed. For instance if you didn't have a very good connection, that could really seriously affect your gameplay and it could turn out to be very horrible indeed.

"This year we looked at this [online] as a top priority and we tested half way around the world, so that even for people who don't have good connections we wanted to pursue how we can make the game still playable... we found a solution as well as taking on more players, four this time, for multiplayer online."

Seabass also promised that his team wouldn't be resting on its laurels and further improvements could be on the way post-release. "We're not going to stop, until we're fully satisfied with this online version of PES 2009, we want to go even further. So I promise you it will still continue to change and improve further as we go along."

Read XBW's hands-on here and look out for the full PES 2009 interview with Seabass on CVG shortly.

Too late!! They stole my money last year and left me high and dry. I'm not giving them my trust again. I purchased Fifa instead and I'm totally addicted to the "be a pro" mode. It's not perfect but the most fun I've had with a footy game for years.

i dont blame yaa mate - i think is is bang out of order when these f***ing devs admit way down the line that their game was SHIT - funny how he never said f*** all 2 days before they released the game tho. the online was virtually unplayable!!!!

i have fifa 09 and it is brilliant i have to say, no lag whatsoever online also. but i will wait before i even consider buying this years version of Pro. problem is alot of my mates LOVE THE DAMN THING AND MOAN AT ME CONSTANTLY til i buy it ;-(

They really better fix it!! It's my only chance to play a footy game this season (PC).

i have to agree from the demos Pro has totally lost its appeal and edge it seems stiff and also hard to tackle people with high dribble stats so the games are always really high scoring, Which is what i hated about fifa a few years ago. I cant stand the way the ball sounds, as my m8 said it sounds like ur kickin wet cardboard lol. Guess its the first year i wont buy PES.

Too little.. too late.. FIFA is now leagues ahead, sprinting up the field and passing with fluidity and guile.. letting fly with customisation and doing shimmying runs towards PES's defence.. online play has far better match fitness, and EA is now releasing 30 yard stunners into Pro Evo's gaping net...

FIFA 3 - 0 PES

Hmm.. i felt 'creative' over 'constructive' critisism was more apt..

there's a review up on IGN now. according to them the online lag has been sorted to an extent. but then again they're playing on nearly empty servers just now.

Sorry to disagree with everyone on here but if the online has been 'prioritised' this year then I'm a happy man.

I still think it's shocking the way that they handled last years release but they've admitted the fault (albeit very late in the day) and hopefully rectified it. The promise of continued improvement in the future is also good to know as after sales support for PES08 was none existent.

Some of you on here have very short memories though. How many s**t versions of Fifa have been released over the years? Yet the first time Konami drop the ball and EA get close you all scream that PES is now officially rubbish and Fifa is the new golden boy!

I'm not saying that Konami are perfect or should be defended after last years showing but it's strange how all of EA's past Fifa sins seem to have been forgiven this year.

Well said that man.

I'm not prepared to hail FIFA as the new king just because they've finally released a decent game after 12 years of garbage.

You cheeky sodding bastard! I'm running a 10meg line which is more than acceptable for everything else and you have the bollocks to insinuate that the problem lies with my connection?

Were I not built like a blancmange, afraid of physical pain, too tight to fork out for a ticket to Japan and well aware that I'd end up in jail, I'd head over there and kick your arse!

This years FIFA is a superb game and has thankfully buried what has been a sub-par joke of a footie game for years...Try a fishing simulator Seabass and leave the "beautiful game" to the real pro's!

We are consumers. We flock to the best product of the moment.

While Fifa this year is an excellent game, and be a pro mode is great - well worth the money.

My biggest problem, is it just not that much fun playing a standard online game. Its a bit like watching Italy. Slow, borring and mainly physical (oh and someone scores a goal a couple of minutes before the end). Don't get me wrong it is far better on this front than 2008, but sill doesn't have the excitment I want in a footy game.

Where PES shines in my opinion (particularly when the online mode is not jumping around all over the place) is the controls are not overly complicated and the passing games feels quicker and more fluid. I still get frustations with Fifa, that it doesn't always seem to do what you intend.

However, if you look at the last paragraphs of what the guy from Konami is saying (if we disect the marketing speech) is the game when it gets shipped, will not work that great online, but that they are intending to work to try and improve it over the coming months. Persumably the need to ship before Christmas outweighs the desire to ensure online mode works as good as Fifa.

CVG, I hope you commenced your interview/conversation with the first question of: "What the F**k were you thinking about last year?" Nobody's ever properly grilled him in interviews and PES 2008's mess deserves him to be put under pressure with probing questions on what went wrong.

I don't know what he's talking about with the controls though in relation to the online mess - they've barely ever changed and are still not making use of a controller fully. Why do the d-pad and left analogue stick both function as movement control? - either should be good enough for a player to stick to without using the other for different instances, so the other could be used for tactics rather than button combinations.

Well I'm not too sure what platforms the majority of people played Pro Evo on but the Wii SKU was great. I did experience a lost connection here and there but it certainly wasn't unplayable and beat FIFA hands-down in terms of being a football simulation. Direct control of off-the-ball runs for the first time ever. 8)

FIFA 09 for the Wii is bloody terrible, and when Pro Evo 2009 comes out it can't fail to be a hit.

Look I'm sick of saying this :

Yes PES2008 on PS3/360 was an absolute shocker.

BUT

PES2008 on PS2 is perhaps the definitive version on that generation of consoles. Certainly, it was the best version since the legendary PES5.

But it seems most people got PES2008 on PS3/360, and have been rightly left traumatised. I still can't quite bring myself to go FIFA though, despite this year being the first ever where I have considered it.

The problem is Tatsuka`s team have done next to nothing with the franchise on current gen consoles ,however it is nice to see they are trying to fix it i also want the brutally tough (on anything above 3 stars) masterleague sorting out the default players are frankly worthless it took me 2 in-game seasons to sort out a promotion winning team although at one point i started a teaup on an easier diffuclty and found it highly amusing when kevin doyle (of in-game and real-life relegated reading decided to reject my premiership (equivalent) cup and champions league (again equivalent) team in spite of a 200% wage increase

The people who think that Seabass had one bad year are having a laugh. PES hasn't improved in years, while FIFA has. I was a PES fan for many moons, but the game is now a very poor second to FIFA. I have FIFA 09 and I have never felt more in control of a footie game. The PES demo felt so old fashioned and clunky - and the guy who mentioned the sound effects is spot on - wet cardboard all the way. The last PES wasn't just bad on xbox 360 and ps3 - it had dreadful slowdown on the PSP as well, in exactly the same places as the PS3 and 360 versions. The franchise is tainted now, FIFA 09 all the way for me.

FIFA still feels on rails, even after years, the Demos also show scoring to be more luck than judgement.

PES or FIFA its down to your game style, I just dont like FIFA, end of, although I will keep trying the demos, but its no improvement in the game play for me still

I am shocked to read all the positive vibes for Fifa, i played the full game round a friends house after playing the demo and clould not beleive how slow the players are, how the ball always seems to be on a string and floaty (typical FiFA trait) and how dull it was to play agaisnt friends.

Played the proevo demo last night agaisnt friends after the pub 2vs 2, and had the best time once again ..the fundamental difference between pro and fifa is that pro is a football purists game. I love pro as a football conouiseur( excuse spelling) it allowa me to construct true tactics, fully edit my game, and play the beautiful game in many ways. I can play a passing game or a direct attacking game or set my team out to counter attack, the possibilities are endless. However people can defend FIFA over pro is beyond me...If it wasnt for pro we would still be playing isometric games with sluggish controls and a monopoly by EA (produce shocking games)

Wake up and smell the bacon people PRO is back and FIFA is just pretending as per usual
