- The Rajah quilt
On Display | 7–29 August 2008
The Rajah quilt was produced by women on board The Rajah as it sailed towards Hobart Town in 1841. The fabrication of the quilt was organised by prison reformer Elizabeth Fry and the British Ladies Society for the Reformation of Female Prisoners – most likely supervised by free passenger Kezia Hayter. It has captured Gallery visitors’ imagination since its acquisition in 1989. Due to its size, fragility and lightsensitive nature, the quilt is only available for viewing once a year.
