A Brief History of Poland in the Last 200 Years
This site has a map of Poland in 1772. Partitions of Poland are shown on a map in 1795 when Poland was partitioned into Prussia, Austria and Russia. A map of the situation after the Vienna Congress in 1815 is shown. There are also maps of the country boundaries in 1920 and 1995. Take a look at these maps. It will give you an idea of why there is so much confusion of what your ancestors nationality "really" was.
