This is an excellent map of the towns as they are today. It's also a great one to find towns close to the one you are seeking when trying to locate a town that has a church that is close to your ancestors' ancestral home.
Genealogy Unlimited - Hofer Series
Genealogy Unlimited sells a series of modern 1:200,000 scale road maps published in Germany by Höfer Verlag that are useful for locating villages in former German areas. The maps show communities in two languages - German and Polish, Russian or Czech, depending on the area. They are indexed, using the German names. They also include a small magnifier to help you find your community, no matter how small.
Global Gazetteer
This is a directory of 2880532 of the world's cities and towns, sorted by country and linked to a map for each town. It gives you the weather report for the towns. It shows many tiny villages. It's great to get a good idea of proximity to country's border and elevation.

Maps of Poland (1:100,000 and 1:300,000 scale) and Germany (1:150,000 scale) are available at reasonable prices. Online printable order form. Catherine Brewster has ordered maps from Travel Genie and they are excellent, very detailed. If you know where your town/village is located, but aren't sure which map you need, you can email them and they will check to see which map you need before you place your order.
