Addresses for Archives in Western Ukraine and S.E. Poland

Database of Records Held by the Archives in Poland
When you search for records, you will need to know the name of parish or the administrative district, in which your ancestor lived. To see which archive has the records, click on more when you find the place listed. That will give you the name of the state archive, street address, website and email address, if they have one. When writing to any of the archives, you can write in English. Replies will be in Polish. If you need help in transcrbing their reply, join the Poland Border Surnames mail list. We have members, who will help you. Type Translation needed in your subject line. Volunteerw will assist you. If you can type out the entire reply, you have received, you will get a translation ... maybe more than one. :)

Archives charge between $20.00 to $30.00 per hour for researh time. Copies of documents are about $4.00 each. If the document covers more than one page, the price will be per page. When you write to them, and only wish to have one document, state that, otherwise they will do a thorough research, and that search can run up a cost, which may be more than you wish to pay.

When you write to the archives make sure you state the name of the person(s), record event (birth, marriage or death), village, parish or administrative district, date event occurred. If you do not have this information, they will not do a search for you. Being precise and accurate is a must. It can take about a month to receive a reply. They will want you to transfer money from your bank to their bank. They will give you the code numbers, which you will need to take to your bank.
