SHERIFF'S UNIFORM-WEB SITE

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - She's not a deputy, even though she's wearing a uniform shirt. Authorities in Tennessee want to know how 1 of their uniforms ended up on an X-rated Web site. Officials say a nude model is also shown wearing what looks like a Shelby County Sheriff deputies' shirt, complete with patches and a gold star badge. Sheriff's department officials say they know the woman isn't a department employee. Authorities add that someone called in a tip about the uniform on the porn site.

Teen Detective

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - Nancy Drew could be getting a partner in crime-fighting -- a 13-year-old boy. Police in a New York City suburb report the young man did the detective work in tracking down a 17-year-old accused in a bike theft. Scarsdale police say the 13-year-old's nearly $2,300 mountain bike was stolen while the kid was in a deli. The boy did the leg work on the Internet and says he found his bike for sale on eBay. Officers arrested the 17-year-old for possession of stolen property. He was released to his parents and his due in court October 1st.

NAKED LUNCH

GREENVILLE, Maine (AP) - Three Maine friends have gotten their bare butts in a jam -- over a free sandwich. Crystal Stillwell, Bernard Beckwith and Christian Simpson are pleading innocent to charges of indecent conduct. The Black Frog Restaurant on Moosehead Lake has a standing offer of a free prime rib sandwich to skinny-dipping customers. Authorities say no one in the restaurant objected to the naked trio. But the three were charged after a family on a nearby boardwalk complained to police. Their trials are set for November 3rd.

GUM DNA

LAKEVILLE, Minn. (AP) - Here's something to chew on. Authorities in Minnesota report cracking a cold case -- thanks to DNA on chewed gum. According to court documents, Dairo Giraldo-Soto is charged in a Lakeville jewel robbery three years ago. The gum was found covering the ignition of a jewelry salesman's rental car. Investigators say while the salesman was trying to start his car, someone grabbed $300,000 worth of jewels. Police sent the gum to a crime lab for analysis, and Giraldo-Soto's name came up this June. He's serving a 5-year prison sentence in Missouri on another case. The missing jewels have never been found.

MOCK ESCAPE

MOUNT OLIVE, W.Va. (AP) - Not many prison escapes are announced in advance. But authorities in West Virginia are asking concerned citizens not to help if they see a couple of escaped inmates next Wednesday. The "fugitives" won't be fugitives at all, but sheriff's deputies. It's all part of a drill planned for the Mount Olive Correctional Complex. Officials say the exercise will involve road blocks, K-9 units and possible car inspections. And they don't want civilians trying to catch their escapees.

NEW YORK-WHALES

NEW YORK (AP) - Add whale songs to the sounds of NYC. Cornell University researchers say they've captured the sounds of whales singing in the waters surrounding New York City. The scientists report it's a first. They've recorded fin, humpback and North Atlantic right whales on mics placed about 13 miles from the entrance of New York Harbor and off the shores of Fire Island. The researchers hope to use the data to better protect the endangered animals.
