Mandela in London, 1962

20 June - 3 August 2008

This year Nelson Mandela will be celebrating his 90th birthday. To honour this occasion Museum of London is remembering his first visit to London in June 1962 with a small photographic display. This collection of 17 striking black and white photographs show a youthful Mandela in London during what was to be some of his last days of freedom.

Upcoming exhibitions in the foyer:

The Big Smoke

1 July - 21 September

Using objects and images from the Museum of London's collections this new display will chart the history of smoking from the first introduction of tobacco to London to changes in attitude over the centuries. One year on, the display will also showcase different opinions on the smoking ban and show its effects on London businesses and Londoners.

Shutting up Shop

2 October - 23 November

Explore the demise of the traditional local shop with this insightful photographic display of old-style London shops from the 1970s and 1980s, including more recent photographs showing what happened to the sites after they closed. These moving photographs will be accompanied by recordings of interviews with the former owners for whom these shops were much more than just a business.
