John Burt is trying to resolve the parentage of Thomas BURT, thought to be Benjamin and Anne BURT. He has searched the parish records for Lytchett Matravers and every adjacent parish but has not located the marriage of Benjamin and Anne BURT. It is this marriage about which he would like more information.
Arlene Bogardus is searching for information on Robert BINGHAM who was born in Sherborne DOR and moved to the USA a a young man at no known date. He was an engineer, both in dry dock and steamship work while living in Portsmouth, Virginia USA. He and his wife Mary had the following children: Mary Ann Bingham (b.11 Oct 1816), Robert Bingham (b.1819), Elizabeth Chapman Bingham (b.1822), Samuel Bingham (b. 1824) and George Washington Bingham (b.1827).
Deborah Crawford would welcome any information, no matter how insignificant, about her great grandparents Albert and Gertrude Chapple who were married on 15 Aug 1900 at the Parish Church of Verwood & Westmoors DOR. Although the birth certificate of Albert gives the surname as CHAPPLE (the spelling used subsequently in Canada), the marriage certificate gives it as CHAPPELL.
Annette Moy is seeking information about Charles Osmond and his wife Ann nee Newson who emigrated from Yeovil SOM to Australia in 1851, with their young family - Henry 12y, George 11y, Charles 10y, Emma 8y, Mary Ann 6y, John 3y and William an infant. They travelled on the ship KATE but, during the voyage, Charles was seasick all the way. Tragedy struck when the ship berthed in Perth, Western Australia, because Charles jumped ship and was never seen or heard of again.
Brian Waterman is seeking information in his search for his 4xGGF William Waterman who may have been born in Poole DOR or nearby and married Elizabeth (no maiden name). William was a Merchant (fisherman) who went to Fogo NFLD CAN in the early 1800s. William or his son William purchased a Merchant supply company and renamed it William Waterman and Co. in 1867. The Company had three operating locations. One of these was Waterman's Harbour, a now abandoned fishing community on Waterman's Harbour Island. The 1871 Lovell Directory lists three Waterman men: John and Joseph (fishermen), William (a planter). Brian has found no information on Joseph Waterman, though he may be related to John.
Tony Lane is searching for information on Andrews, Carter, Hatcher, Lane and Miller families. In particular, Hanah Andrews married George Lane at Huntspill SOM in 1858 and they later moved to Sturminster Newton DOR. They had 8 children as follows:
Esma Turner is searching for information about the Turner family who lived in the Coleford/Kilmersdon SOM area for several generations and the men were most likely mostly miners with farming background as well. Isaac Turner's family is the earliest for which Esma has some details. His four children were Amelia, George, John and Ruth. Esma has made contact with two branches of John's family who did not know each other but are now making contact. She would be most interested to have contact with any descendants of the other children of Isaac.
Shelly Isaac is searching for relative and descendants of James WEST who was born in Swell SOM on 24 Dec 1827. At the age of 19, he enlisted in the Army in the 17th Regiment of Foot at Taunton SOM and served for 21 years. His siblings are believed to have been John, Robert and Mary Ann. Robert is believed to have joined the Army also. John became a sailor and was a mate on the ship Alana. Mary Ann married an Eggington and they emigrated to NZ. A bible lists Swell as the birth place of James but the Army records show that he was born in the SOM Parish of Fivehead which is quite close to the village of Swell.

Family Queries
He has located a marriage of a Benjamin BURT to Caroline GOOBY at Sturminster Marshall on 6 Mar 1820. Unless Caroline was known as Anne, there must be a separate couple who were Thomas's Parents. Other evidence seems to link him with the later Thomas via census data and family names. This Benjamin appears to have been christened Benjamin BIRT (sic) with brother Thomas (twins maybe?) at Sturminster Marshall on 16 Sep 1787. The situation is confused by similar names in the area and John would appreciate any help in resolving the dilemma.
Elizabeth JOYCE was born on 9 Jun 1824 and her family came from Winterborne Zelston. Her father Jesse was a carpenter and was described as a widower when he married Sophia HICKLY at Winterborne Zelston on 13 Nov 1823.
John would welcome any assistance from those interested in these families BURT (sometimes BIRT) and JOYCE.
Robert Snr died in Portsmouth VA on 22 Dec 1829. His will said that he would probably inherit property in Somerset though where is not known. There may have been some connection with a Chapman family who could have had one of his maternal ancestors but the actual link has not been found.
Arlene would welcome any assistance that might be provided about Robert Bingham, his ancestry and his training which led to his departure to the USA as a marine engineer.
On Albert's birth certificate, Edmund Chapple was given as an agricultural labourer. On Gertrude's birth certificate, father Samuel Joy was listed as a jobbing labourer. Albert and Gertrude emigrated to Canada somewhere between 1900 and 1908 when Deborah's GF was born in Canada.
On arrival in Sydney, they went straight to Paterson River at the Tocal station (not railway!) where Charles Osmond was engaged. It is of interest to note that son George at 12 years old was taught to ride by Frederick Ward, better known as the bushranger Thunderbolt.
He was taught well and became an expert horseman. The family selected some 40 or 80 acre blocks and began growing tobacco. In addition, they had a bullock team and commenced carrying provisions from the town of Morpeth nearby out to Western and North Western NSW, places like Bourke, Dubbo and Armidale.
Annette has much of the background about these families in NSW but would be delighted to connect with someone who knows something of the ancestry of Charles Osmond and Ann Newson in the Yeovil SOM area.
William and Elizabeth had four children:
John (b.c1932 possibly Poole DOR), m. 6 Jul 1852 Elizabeth Loder at Fogo NFLD
Priscilla (b.? possibly Poole DOR), m. 24 Oct 1854 George Humpries
George (b. 15 Feb 1842, pob?)
Elizabeth (b. 19 Jun 1845, pob?)
William (dob? pob?), Brian's 3xGGF, m1. unknown, son William (2xGGF) and m2. 7 Nov 1865 Elizabeth Caffey at Change Islands NFLD.
Brian can trace the family down from these folk and would willingly provide this background. He is keen to establish the birthplace and ancestry of John Waterman and would appreciate any help.
Edward b.1860 Huntspill SOM
Annie Maria b. 1861 Huntspill SOM, m. 5 Feb 1885 James HATCHER (father unknown, mother Sarah Ann Hatcher)
Joseph b. 1863 Huntspill SOM, m. 1887 Mary Lane (father Luke Lane of Lydlinch DOR)
Henry b. 1869 Sturminster Newton DOR
Hanah b. 1871 Sturminster Newton DOR
Eliza Jane b. 1873 Stalbridge DOR, m. 18 Sep 1895 Henry MILLER (father Peter Frank Miller of Spetisbury DOR)
Alice b. 1876 Stalbridge DOR
Tony is descended from Joseph and Mary Lane.
She has a curious problem for which she would be delighted to have some resolution. Amelia Turner's son Thomas TURNER married Joanna HAMBLIN at Kilmersdon SOM on 6 Jun 1821 and they had eleven children: Isaac Daniel (c1822), Elijah (1823), Hugh (1826-1904) and Charles (1829), all baptised at Kilmersdon SOM, with Ann (1832), Samuel (1834), Ellen (1837), Emma Amelia (1839), Israel (1842), Albyn (1844) and Clara (1846) all born at Coleford SOM.
Elijah emigrated to VIC AUS in 1849, Isaac Daniel in 1851 and then Charles in 1854. Charles met his two brothers on the Bendigo goldfield diggings. In 1857, they purchased a block of creek flats at Bagshot VIC and stayed there or in the vicinity (Huntly and Goornong) all their lives. Elijah and Isaac never married but Charles, listed as bachelor, married 1871 in VIC AUS to Mary Louisa [Lucy] PLUMMER of Mortenhampstead DEV and they had nine children. The brothers gradually acquired more land and dropped out of partnership to own their own paddocks in their own right.
Here is Esma's mystery! Isaac Daniel Turner owned a particular block of land for which the drawing has a pencil line drawn through it, cutting it into equal parts with an arrow from each half to the margin with the names "Algernon TURNER" and "Owen TURNER" and the additional words "Sons of Charles TURNER, nephews of Isaac D. TURNER". There are no dates but the plan may have been marked prior to Charles' marriage to Mary Louisa. No data (neither in AUS or SOM) have been found for these two "nephews" who may have been born before Charles left Somerset.
Esma would be delighted to have any help and advice about them - were they real, did they die young, were they brought up by some other member of the Turner family in SOM or were they fostered? She has plenty of the Turner VIC AUS history but this part is a real puzzle.
Shelly would greatly appreciate any information that would help to establish the next generation back from James West.
