France fell to Nazi Germany on this date in 1940. One of the casualties was the marriage of Molly Spotted Elk, an Indian woman from Maine who had established a dance career in Paris and married political journalist John Archambault there. Archambault disappeared without a trace during the invasion, leaving Spotted Elk and their 6-year-old daughter to flee Europe via Portugal.
