I made the mistake of cleaning up after my oldest (13 now)when she was younger. Things like picking up dishes after dinner, picking up her toys, cleaning her room... Now it's a nightmare to get her to pick up after herself. I won't make that mistake again!
BTW, I'm not sure how the beating or spanking answers came from this question. It's got nothing to do with that!

I agree. Our children will learn best when they are able to be taught. It isn't about the punishments, the rewards, groundings, time outs, special privileges, or praise. It's about children learning the reasons so that they KNOW how to manage life on their own.
Beating and spanking are the same thing. Lots of people say that they spank but never hard enough to hurt or to leave marks so it isn't beating. What is it then? Let me smack you on the butt so you know I mean business, even though it isn't going to hurt you, you'll be embarrassed and upset and think twice before you do something wrong again? Emotional beating is still beating. - This quote could be interpreted several ways so its difficult to say if I agree or disagree.
I can say that I believe a parent teaches by doing. If I say something over and over to my kids without showing them that I do it myself, they arent likely going to believe me or respect me. Parents must provide by example/ - I agree, but that doesn't mean beating them, or leaving them to cry alone. All that teaches them is that they are bad and mommy doesn't love them.
Again, I'm 27, was never spanked or left to cry alone, and I'm rather independent. I also have a great career. My 3 brothers were parented the same as me, and they're all successful people, and not insecure. -

Agree. It is similar to "you can give a man a fish to help him, but to truly help him, teach him how to fish. - Agree 100%
But i am not going to try to ''teach'' a newborn to fall asleep on his own by leaving him to cry.. That's NOT what it means. -
