What
Makes a Fighter Pilot?
("Tex" Hill receiving the Distinguished Service Cross)
“I just want to thank everybody for coming
out to honor me … you certainly honor me by your presence,” said Hill
following the presentation.
Then in typical “Tex” fashion, Hill used his shining hour to turn the
spotlight on others, most brightly on four Tiger Shark comrades from the
75th Fighter Squadron.
“There are many others sitting in this audience who deserve this
recognition more than I do,” said Hill. “I can never measure up to these
guys. They are my heroes.” |
Gen. Henry Viccellio Jr, retired
In presenting the
Distinguished Service Cross to his close friend, Viccellio praised
Hill’s actions, but stressed that event reflected the type of
character and discipline he displayed throughout his military service
and beyond. “When you look at what they (AVG and 23rd FG) accomplished
… more than 1,000 enemy aircraft destroyed with our cost just a tiny
fraction of that number,” said Viccellio. “That reflects discipline,
sound tactics and a sense of responsibility, mission and purpose.
From the day Tex Hill got there until the day
he left … he was part of the leadership chain that instilled,
injected, nourished, built and sustained the discipline that produced
those remarkable results."

What Makes a Leader?
President George W. Bush
praised Hill’s patriotism, writing:
“During these extra- ordinary times we have been
reminded that our achievements in peace and war have been built on the
service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform.
Your devotion to duty and your
legendary battles in World War II have earned you the respect and admiration of all Americans
…
Your bravery in battle continues to be an inspiration as
we face the challenges of a new era.”
Secretary of the Air Force
Dr. James G. Roche
described Tex Hill’s heroics as “… an act of
sheer
bravery, unparalleled skill and
outright audacity – in
other words, just another day for the Flying Tigers.” |
