Josh Macabuag in Jozini

Josh Macabuag has traveled to Jozini, South Africa, where he will be working with the charity Engineers Without Borders (EWB) to build a much needed sports facility.

About the organization

While in Jozini, Josh will be working with Engineers Without Borders, an internationally based NGO, with operations in more than 35 countries. Through implementing sustainable building projects the organization aims to create a world where all people have access to the knowledge and resources with which to meet their basic human needs. Its actions address such areas as water supply and sanitation, food production and processing, housing and construction, energy, transportation and communication, income generation, and employment creation.

Josh is trying to get the electricity on at the public swimming pool in Jozini, which as been inaccessible for months. The district electrician is very hard to track down and when he finally visits the pool he tells Josh to get the wrong items from an electrical wholesaler. In the end Josh has to find a new electrician to help with the problem.

Josh is trying to find a solution to the poor sanitation in Jozini by finding an alternative to the pit latrines, which are hard to empty and largely impractical. An easy-to-assemble, prefabricated structure is now available. It takes two men just 10 minutes to construct.

There is a serious sanitation problem in Jozini. Most people must choose between a pit latrine, which consists of a hole in the ground and is unpleasant to use, or a "VIP" toilet, which includes a ventilation system, but is much harder to build and is sometimes placed in inconvenient areas.
