U.S. flies in more aid to Myanmar
|
Two more U.S. aid flights arrived in Myanmar on Tuesday as the cyclone-ravaged country struggled to recover. Questions linger, though, about how much aid will get to disaster victims. A U.S. military commander said the country’s government seems unaware of the death and scope of destruction. The United Nations estimates that the cyclone’s death toll could reach 100,000. The death toll from China’s earthquake is staggering – and still rising. At least 12,000 people were killed by a massive earthquake in central China. In one city, thousands of victims were buried under the rubble. China is welcoming donations of money and material but not relief workers because officials say the country’s roads cannot handle additional traffic.

A lethal Midwest tornado, with winds of up to 175 miles per hour, killed at least 22 people – including a mother protecting her son. The storm ravaged parts of Oklahoma, Missouri and Georgia. States of emergency were declared in Oklahoma and Georgia counties.

People turn to charities when they need help but where do charities turn when they need help? Some of the nation’s biggest charities are trying to figure that out. They report a surge in demand while their donations are slacking off. The people asking for help, though, don’t fit the profile of soup kitchens patrons. Most are working poor who are squeezed by high food and fuel prices and the foreclosure crisis.
