People turn to charities when they need help but where do charities turn when they need help? Some of the nation’s biggest charities are trying to figure that out. They report a surge in demand while their donations are slacking off. The people asking for help, though, don’t fit the profile of soup kitchens patrons. Most are working poor who are squeezed by high food and fuel prices and the foreclosure crisis.

A lethal Midwest tornado, with winds of up to 175 miles per hour, killed at least 22 people – including a mother protecting her son. The storm ravaged parts of Oklahoma, Missouri and Georgia. States of emergency were declared in Oklahoma and Georgia counties.

For some parts of New Orleans, rebuilding is still a dream more than two years after Hurricane Katrina. Once marked by dense housing, the Lower 9th Ward especially was heavily damaged by the storm. There has been little rebuilding done there since the storm, although some people have been living in trailers in the area.
