Eric's on the money as usual.

And if you're asking if you can drive on your Hawaii license in California while your California license record is suspended, the answer is no, period....regardless of whether or not you're a student or a visitor or whatever.

When California suspended you, they said you no longer have the privilege to drive on California roads. It does not matter where you are from or why you're in California - if you're here and you're suspended in this state, you can't drive.

    Tough one.

If you're going to school, have a job or have taken up residence in Cali and have done so for over 10 or 20 days, you need to get a California driver license. Its required.

It'll be suspended when you apply for it. I'm quite certain you have a suspended California "Index number" now. That's what we call a California driver license that doesn't exist. That's what all of our "undocumented" friends get when they get hit for driving. You get picked up here and do not have a Cali license, you get an index number, then that gets suspended.

    Confused?

this is the way it usually goes: if you are from Hawaii with a Hawaiian license and you go to a different state you are allowed to drive on the Hawaiian license as a courtesy that way you don't have to get a license in every state. in other words your privilege to drive is extended to what ever state you travel to, now if you commit an infraction in another state and are found guilty and the normal penalty is license suspension what happens is that state will issue you a license number from that state(usually a special series of numbers identifying such situations) and then they will suspend that number and you have therefore lost your privilege to drive in that state. your home state may or may not take action against your driving status at home depending on your home states policies but they have to be notified first if they are going to do anything. so unless you can get a permit in California you can not drive there until the suspension is lifted. this goes for each state you go to as far as i know

Since California's law enforcement knows you were using the Hawaiian driving licence recently, and they may have a record of it somewhere if you get pulled over again. The thing is some police departments do not participate in the database so it's a crapshoot.

California no longer allows a "restricted" licence - it's a full suspension.
