A literary agent has requested the first chapter for my book in an email. Should I paste it in the body? Help!

I have a dilemma here. I don't know whether to paste it in the body of the email, or to attach it as a file. Most agents say that they don't open query letter attachments, so is it the same policy for a sample chapter?

I have formatted the manuscript...1 inch margins along the page, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman, with a header: title/last/name/page #. I have tabbed each paragraph, and all that. I'm afraid it's going to get messed up if I paste it in the body. What to do? Thanks in advance!

I too, would suggest putting in an attachment. I've sent a few manuscripts in emails, and have always sent them in attachments.
I always read the publishing companies submission guidelines and I'm finding that usually, they don't want attachments if your query and synospsis only. I also find that each business has different guidelines for submissions. So I read them carefully.
I haven't submitted anything to an agent before, though.
I hope I've helped some.
Good luck,

Thanks! All of the answers were really informative, but sadly, I could only choose one best answer. =(
