Online Movie Piracy Continues To Soar, Says MPAA Study

Despite its best efforts to curb online movie piracy, the number of films being downloaded continues to rise, the Motion Picture Association of America revealed in a study released in Belgium Tuesday. According to the study, more than 2.5 billion movies were downloaded worldwide in 2005 -- a 250-percent increase over the previous year. (The MPAA's figures have been hotly disputed by other Internet analysts.) The study also indicated that at any one time, 17 million people are downloading movies via peer-to-peer websites. Most of the movies available via those sites were originally recorded in theaters by persons in their seats holding camcorders, the study said.

Does this mean that the honest paying will continue to pay higher ticket prices ,higher DVD prices because of this? Why isn't the MPAA actually going after these people for? What's stopping them?

For a start I really wouldn't trust the statistics they churn out.

Also, you're not paying more for tickets, DVDs and the likes because of the "great losses" Hollywood is suffering from piracy. In fact, quite the opposite, last year the US box office had its best year of business, growing 5.4 percent over 2006 and bringing in $9.63 billion.

If you're paying more, its to line the pockets of the rich fat cats and the overpaid actors/actresses earning $20/$30 million a film, the pirates are just a handy scapegoat
