WALTER ANDERSON
CHAIRMAN AND CEO

Walter Anderson was named
Chairman, Publisher and CEO of Parade Publications in February 2000. During his years at the helm
of the largest circulation magazine in the United States, Anderson has redefined PARADE’s
leadership role in the publishing community.
During his twenty-year tenure as the Editor of PARADE, Anderson brought new energy and
renewed vision to the magazine, revitalizing its staff and helping to increase the magazine’s
circulation from 21.6 million in 129 Sunday newspapers to 32 million in more than 400 newspapers. Anderson
also added such internationally known writers as Julia Child, David Halberstam, David H. Levy,
Norman Mailer, Dotson Rader, Gail Sheehy, Herman Wouk and the late Dick Schaap to the magazine. As
Publisher, Anderson remains committed to PARADE’s continued growth and success.
Anderson dropped out of high school to join the Marine Corps, where he served from 1961 to
1966. For years, he has been a national spokesman for GED, the program that enables high school
dropouts to earn their equivalency diplomas. Obtaining his own GED while in the Marine Corps,
Anderson went on to gain a college education and eventually wrote five books, including Meant to
Be, The Confidence Course and Courage Is A Three-Letter Word.
Anderson has received many honors throughout his career, but perhaps his greatest
recognition was the 1994 Horatio Alger Award—honoring individuals who have succeeded in the face of
adversity—for which he was nominated by the late Norman Vincent Peale. Others who have received the
Horatio Alger Award include Colin Powell, Oprah Winfrey, Billy Graham and Maya Angelou.
JOHN J. BENI
VICE CHAIRMAN

John J. Beni, a veteran of
more than 50 years in the publishing industry, was named Vice Chairman of Parade Publications in
2001 after serving as President and Chief Operating Officer of the company since January 1996.
Prior to joining PARADE, Beni was Senior Vice President and General Manager of the New York
Division of Cahners Publishing Company, where he was responsible for 15 consumer and trade
publications included in the bridal, child-care, entertainment, marine, printing and publishing
groups.
Beni began his publishing career in 1955 as an advertising sales representative for American
Weekly. Nearly ten years later, he joined Redbook as an advertising sales representative and
progressed rapidly to New York Advertising Manager, Advertising Director and then Publisher.
From 1978 to 1988, Beni was President of Gruner & Jahr USA Publishing, Inc., where he
repositioned and relaunched Parents, Expecting and YM (formerly Young Miss) magazines. He was also
responsible for custom publishing and the children’s book clubs of Gruner & Jahr.
Before joining Cahners, Beni was with The New York Times Company, where he was president and
publisher of McCall's, Working Mother and Working Woman.
Beni served for many years as a director and officer of the Magazine Publishers of America
and as a member and Chairman of the Board of the Publishers Information Bureau.
Born in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., Beni attended North Tarrytown High School and graduated from the
Hackley School, where he is now a trustee. A 1955 graduate of Yale University, he served in the
United States Army from 1955 to 1957.
RANDY SIEGEL
PRESIDENT AND PUBLISHER

Randy Siegel is President of Parade Publications and Publisher of PARADE, the most widely read magazine in America. He is responsible for the company's day-to-day operations as well as its overall strategy. Siegel was named Publisher of PARADE in 2003, after serving as Executive Vice-President, where he oversaw marketing, digital media and PARADE's strategic partnerships with its 400 distributing newspapers.
Before joining PARADE, Siegel was a marketing executive at Newsweek and The Washington Post. He was also Publisher and Editor of the award-winning Cleveland Free Times. As a writer, he has been a contributor to a number of publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, The Washington Post and USA TODAY.
Siegel earned a B.A. from Wesleyan University in Connecticut and an M.B.A from Yale University.
He serves on the Board of Trustees of Share Our Strength, a national hunger relief organization in Washington, D.C., as well as CURE (Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy), based in Chicago. He is also a member of the Society of Professional Journalists.
MIKE DeBARTOLO
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF

Mike DeBartolo was named
Senior Vice President of Advertising for PARADE Publications in August 2005. DeBartolo leads the
advertising sales department for the largest magazine in the U.S., with a weekly circulation
exceeding 35 million and PIB revenues of more than $600 million.
DeBartolo came to PARADE from Fairchild Publications, where he was Executive Vice
President/B2B Division. There, he managed sales responsibilities for five publishers, 35 sales
people, eight marketers and four editorial teams. During his tenure at Fairchild, DeBartolo helped
launch four new titles and saw the B2B Division outperform the trade publishing category by more
than 10% for the last five years. Both PARADE and Fairchild are divisions of the Advance Magazine
Group.
Prior to joining Fairchild, DeBartolo was Associate Publisher of Money Magazine; National
Sales Manager for Glamour and U.S. Global Advertising Director for Reader’s Digest. At TV Guide, he
was an Account Executive in Chicago before being named Regional Manager/Detroit. He also held
positions at 3M/Pattis Group and J. Walter Thompson in Chicago.
DeBartolo is a Board Member of American Business Media (ABM) and Chairperson of the ABM
Education Committee. He is also a guest speaker for the Medill/ABM Leadership Forum.
JIM HACKETT
SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF
MARKETING

Jim Hackett joined PARADE
as Senior Vice President of Advertising in October 2001 and switched gears in 2005 to focus on
promotion and marketing initiatives as Senior Vice President of Marketing.
Prior to joining PARADE, Hackett was Vice President, Advertising Sales at USA Weekend, where
he was Eastern Advertising Director, Regional Ad Director before Vice President. Prior to that, he
was Vice President of Sales for Marketsource Corporation, a leading media and marketing services
organization offering national advertisers targeted programs in teen, college, young parent and
shopping center market places. Hackett also led the advertising sales and marketing efforts at
American Health magazine, Ziff Davis Communications and Cass Communications. He began his sales
career at the Staten Island Advance.
A 1979 graduate of St. John’s University in Staten Island, Hackett is a member of the Board
of Directors of the Promotion Marketing Association, the Ad Club of New York, where he sits on the
Diversity Committee, Advertising Women of New York and the Detroit Magazine Representatives
Association.
ALLISON WERDER
SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT/BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

Allison Werder is Senior Vice
President of Business Development for PARADE magazine, where she works with senior management to
develop competitive and long-term business strategies. She also oversees PARADE's online operations.
Werder joined PARADE in 2002 as Manager/Planning and Development and was promoted in 2003 to
Director of Business Development. She came from Money Magazine, where she was Advertising Revenue
Manager and Production Finance Manager. Prior to that, she was an Assistant Advertising Finance
Manager at People Weekly.
Allison earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English at the University of Notre Dame, and received
her MBA from Georgetown University.
CHRISTIE EMDEN
VP/COMMUNICATIONS

Christie Emden became Vice
President/Communications for PARADE Magazine in 2005. She is responsible for all internal and
external communications regarding the magazine, its personnel and programs.
Christie began her career at PARADE in 1989 as a public relations assistant. She held various
positions within that department over the years including Director of Public Relations and Director
of Communications.
Under her leadership, publicity for PARADE has increased two-fold. Christie has lead the PR
campaign for The Great American Bake Sale since 2003, garnering an unprecedented number of
impressions and brand awareness of the program across the country. She had similar success with the
PARADE/NFL Community Quarterback program and several of PARADE’s signature features, including its
annual What People Earn issue and its All-America High School sports program.
Christie attended the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She is a member of the
Public Relations Society of America, Women Executives in Public Relations, the Publicity Club of
New York and the Association for Women in Communications. She resides in Teterboro, N.J.
