Police said set to confront Olmert with new evidence

Police will confront Prime Minister Ehud Olmert with new evidence in connection with the ongoing corruption investigation against him, Channel 2 reported on Friday.

According to the report, police have requested that Olmert make himself available for questioning either Saturday night or Sunday, during which they will seek explanations from the prime minister before the scheduled May 25 court deposition of a key witness, U.S. fundraiser Morris Talansky.

In a letter addressed to Olmert's attorneys, the head of the police's National Fraud Unit, Brigadier-General Shlomi Ayalon, wrote: "Mr. Olmert is requested to free up an hour as soon as possible so that he may be questioned prior to Mr. Talansky's preliminary testimony and before he receives evidence gathered in the investigation. We propose Friday, Saturday, or this coming Sunday."

Police are eager to question Olmert before Talansky's deposition due to the fact that Olmert's lawyers would be entitled to view evidence gathered in the fundraiser's testimony. Access to the police's findings would enable Olmert and his attorneys to prepare more thoroughly for police questioning.

In response to the letter, the prime minister's attorneys criticized the handling of the case by the state prosecutors and the police, although they have not responded to the request to schedule the questioning.

The case centers on Talansky, who allegedly transferred tens of thousands of dollars to Olmert during his tenure as the mayor of Jerusalem for a decade beginning in 1993 through his appointment as trade minister beginning in 2003.

Channel 2 reported that police will confront Olmert with evidence they have obtained in recent interrogations of those believed involved in the case.

Earlier this week, police questioned two U.S. businessmen, Sheldon Adelson and S. Daniel Abraham , in connection to the suspicions. Olmert has been questioned over the allegations once this far.

On Thursday, Olmert and his former office manager, Shula Zaken , petitioned the High Court of Justice on Thursday against the prosecution's decision to have a court depose Talansky. The petition will be heard on Monday by a panel of three justices.
