A Century in Thirty Years: Shaykh Zayed and the United Arab Emirates published by MEPC and edited by Joseph A. Kechichian

cover
At the time of its establishment in 1971, few could have foretold the success that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) would achieve over such a short period. Many predicted that the fledgling state would descend into internecine squabbling and self-destruction. Combining seven distinct tribal societies into a single federation was thought to be too difficult. The results, however, have surpassed the highest expectations. The UAE today serves as a model throughout the Arab and Muslim world of diversity and tolerance, the legacy of its visionary leader Shaykh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The revised and edited papers in this volume were first presented on April 20, 1999, at a conference in Washington, DC, sponsored by MEPC: "A Century in Thirty Years: Shaykh Zayed and the United Arab Emirates." The day-long gathering initiated a unique dialogue between Emirati and American analysts and officials. What distinguishes these academic studies is that they present analyses of the UAE's sociopolitical institutions, economy and foreign-policy initiatives from a variety of both Emirati and American perspectives. This, in and of itself, is a new endeavor.

Also included here is an essay by Shaykh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Deputy Prime Minister, who offers his own unique viewpoint on regional matters. This ranking member of the ruling family provides a glimpse into the federation's current perceptions of Gulf security and how it builds on the foundation wisely laid by his father, Shaykh Zayed.

The Gulf, Cooperation and the Council: An American Perspective published by MEPC and edited by Joseph Wright Twinam

Joe Twinam has combined an interesting mix of history, diplomacy, economics and politics in this well-written book on the emergence of the Gulf states in the latter half of the twentieth century. The importance of this area to the United States and the world has been demonstrated repeatedly by such events as the oil embargo of 1973, the energy crisis of 1979 and, more recently, Desert Storm. Ambassador Twinam's readable and well-documented account is a valuable addition to the contemporary history of this region.
