St George's Day

The Globe theatre

For the 5th year running London celebrates St George’s Day with a series of free events. For 2008 English Food is the central theme for the Trafalgar Square event, where world famous Borough Market will be relocating for the day. In addition, the popular annual Shakespeare’s Birthday celebrations at the Globe will take place as well as the Festival of St George at Covent Garden and parade at the Cenotaph.

Festival of English Food

Wednesday 23rd April - Trafalgar Square, 12pm - 7:30pm

Enjoy a culinary extravaganza live on Trafalgar Square with the world famous Borough Market and food inspired street theatre and cabaret performance in a celebration of English Food.

Stalls from Borough Market include:

  • Wrights Oysters oysters and shellfish from Cornwall
  • Shell Seekers Dorset diver caught scallops and shellfish
  • Furness Fish & Poultry Morecombe Bay shrimp
  • Farmer Sharp Herwick lamb
  • Mrs King Melton Mowbray pies and Cornish pasties
  • The Ginger Pig sausage rolls
  • Northfield Farm, Beef
  • Sillfield Farm Westmorland wild boar and pork
  • Chegworth Valley Apple juice
  • Flour Power City bread and scones
  • Neal’s Yard Dairy Cheese
  • England Preserves London’s best jam and pickles

Stage Entertainment from 12pm – 2pm and 5pm- 7:30pm include:

  • Greenwich Dance Agency’s unique cabaret hosted by Sally Marie and featuring dance comedy heroes New Art Club, tap dancer Simeon Weedall and Jane Leaney.
  • Hit duo Kit and the Widow bring their musical satire and waspish wit to the world of celebrity chefs and English table manners.

Street Theatre from 12pm –7:30pm include:

  • The Natural Theatre Company and their magical market stall
  • Hookwink’s theatrical feast – 'Gastronomic’
  • Whalley Range All Star’s animated compost heap
  • Mr Whippy and the Connettes show live from a Ice Cream Van
  • The Courgettes
  • Fairplay’s Fairly Fresh Fish
  • Swank’s Green Fingererd Girls
  • Plunge Bloom’s Vegetable Nannies

Shakespeare’s Globe

Bankside SE1 - Sunday 20th April,
12pm – 5pm (last entry 4.30pm)

England’s contribution to language and literature is being celebrated with free activities at Shakespeare’s Globe for the theatre’s annual Open Day. Taking on a St George’s day theme, the anarchic, physical theatre company Footsbarn will be joined with onstage performers and musicians. There'll also be workshops, games, quizzes and the chance to tread the boards and say a few lines on the world famous stage.

Bankside SE1 - Wednesday 23rd April,
6pm – 7pm

Marking the birthday of Shakespeare and the launch of the Globe’s new theatre season, a very special celebration will take place along the riverside with a floating theatre travelling up the Thames from Butlers Wharf to the Globe.

Festival of St George

Covent Garden - Saturday 19th April,
10.45am – 5pm

The Royal Society of St George present their annual festival on the Covent Garden Piazza with performances, Band of Yeomanry, Moulton Morris and the Jive Aces. Plus Punch and Judy and Mummers Players.

Saturday 19th April, 10.30am – 11.45am

A short service, wreath laying and march past at the Cenotaph.
