Law & Order is back for its eighteenth season and it is back in its traditional home of Wednesday at 10 p.m., although this week we get two hours starting at 9 p.m. and thanks to a stockpile of scripts written ahead of the writers strike, we can expect oodles of new episodes into the spring. Also thanks to the WGA strike, it will be the best thing on television for the for the foreseeable future. more ›

A report released today by the U.S. Census Bureau shows that the minority population has changed significantly in the past seven years. While the overall population of the city has increased about 200,000 between 2000 and 2006, the African-American population is actually on the decline. The city's black population dropped more than 40,000 during the period while the Hispanic and Asian population both increased more than 90,000 during the same period. more ›

On November 23, 1990 a bouncer outside of the Palladium nightclub (now an NYU dorm on 14th St.) was shot and killed when a fistfight escalated to gunplay. A year later, David Lemus and Olmedo Hidalgo were convicted of the killing and sent to prison, despite their defense that they were not even at the Palladium that night. Hidalgo's conviction was later overturned and Lemus was released from prison after 14 years, only to face a retrial by New York prosecutors. The New York Times is now reporting, however, that a former prosecutor for the city who was arguing for that retrial had serious doubts about the man's guilt even as he argued for his prosecution. more ›

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for eastern Hudson County in New Jersey and New York County aka Manhattan, in New York. Stay away from windows and flying debris. Nickel-sized hail is also possible. Gothamist can attest that nickel-sized hail is painful. more ›

For shame to those in the upper crust of New York's income levels! There are only 62,773 of you in New York County, ranking you 13th on a list ranking the country's millionaires. A study by TNS Financial Services tallied up the most households with a net worth of over $1 million in counties across the country. Ranking waaaay at the top of the list is Los Angeles County with 262,800 millionaires and Cook County, where Chicago is located, with 167,873 households. Perhaps our fair city would do better if primary residences were included in net worth and if the five boroughs were combined. Then again, looking at that list, we're sure all the primary residences are ridiculously expensive. more ›

First came word that Gotham was the only city in the country with a population over 1 million to record in increase in poverty. Now the Times reports that Manhattan has the biggest income gap of any county in the United States. The top fifth of earners in Manhattan now make 52 times what the lowest fifth make (that's about $7,047 on the bottom for every $365,826 on the top, or about two cents for every dollar!). In case those numbers didn't make the point: The disparity in Manhattan is roughly equivalent to that of Namibia. more ›
