Day of Prayer

PRAYER, REPENTANCE and SPIRITUAL RENEWAL

Introduction

The Day of Prayer, Repentance and Spiritual Renewal was introduced prior to the 2004 convention of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.  The writers of this document produced it in response to a call by President Kieschnick in October 2003 for the members of the LCMS to devote themselves to these spiritual disciplines on behalf of ourselves, our church, and the Synod in convention.  The writers have again granted permission for the use of this guide in these days prior to the 2007 convention.  The invitation in this guide to pastors, church workers, and lay people – men and women of all ages and opinions - is to devote six hours to prayer and repentance.

Why take time for this?

In our Synod, we need to seek the Spirit's guidance with others who represent a wide spectrum of opinions.  This is not to be a debate over who is right or wrong, or an effort to convince each other about Synod issues.
We need to pray and repent together so that the Spirit of Christ might transform our hearts and minds to seek His will, leading us toward resolution and reconciliation with one another across our Synod as we approach the July 14-19, 2007 synodical convention.

How Will it Work?

• Small groups of 12 people ( a few more or less also works) will gather for six hours (though it can be longer) at a time and place agreed upon.
• Each participant will commit to pray in advance for the Holy Spirit to guide the event so that all that is said and done will be to God's glory and will further the mission Christ gives.
• Each participant is encouraged to fast for the full day, at least foregoing the meal during the six hours.  (Water and juice will be provided.) King David said, “I will humble myself by fasting” (Psalm 69: 10) and Ezra called people “to fast and humble ourselves before God” (Ezra 8: 21).
• Please bring your Bible, a note pad and writing instrument.
