"As
YOU WERE" has a dual role. It completes the series of Service books produced during the 1939-45 War.
It is the first of a new series of post-war Service volumes which will provide a contemporary record of developments in the Australian Navy,
Army, and Air Force, and recall for ex-service men and women something of the "glories of the
past" of the travel, adventures, and above all, the good comradeship of the Service, the memories of which remain when the hardships and suffering have been forgotten.
Because we are still so close to the events of the war which has just ended it is inevitable that stories and articles relating to that war should occupy
a larger part of the space in this book.
The items relating to the Sudan Contingent, the South African War, the Boxer Rebellion, and the 1914-18 War are, however, an indication of the change in scope which will be further developed in later volumes.
The contents of the book are the work of service and ex-service men and women and the views expressed are those of the writers.
Without their whole-hearted support and the readiness with which they have co-operated in this service to the Services the book could not have been produced. Their collaboration is gratefully acknowledged.
Literary and art responsibility has largely rested with Raymond O'Malley and Alan Moore
respectively. G. Hermon Gill - now writing the official history of the Royal Australian
Navy - has advised regarding naval material.
The photographs were selected and arranged by Keith B. Davis. Harold F. Ward has undertaken special duties in connection with production and distribution. Their services also are gratefully acknowledged.
Amongst those who read this book will be many who have yarns of their own to
tell - their own contribution to the documentary mosaic of the war
years; their tribute to comrades with whom they served.
They are invited to send contributions to the Director, Australian War Memorial,
Canberra, for consideration for use in future volumes.
