http://www.math.uic.edu/IMSE/TIMS/tims.html  Teaching Integrated Mathematics and Science (TIMS) project from the Teachers' Academy of Chicago has been very successful in professional development for elementary and middle school teachers.  The project  has activities which identify variables in an investigation and integrate mathematics with science.
