Mission and Outreach

Maasai ChildrenThe Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod has been involved in mission and outreach since 1851 when it established its first mission board. Today LCMS World Mission trains, sends, and supports called career missionaries and appointed volunteer missionaries throughout the United States and in various countries throughout the world where there are mission stations, partner churches or mission relationships.

The LCMS also supports mission work among Jews and Jewish communities, supports LCMS members in the U.S. military, provides mission and ministry opportunities to national and international students at the colleges and universities in the United States.  LCMS Blind Mission provides Braille and tape resources to share the Gospel with those visually impaired, while LCMS Deaf Mission focuses on the "quiet" ministry of deaf outreach. Pentecost 2000+ is a special effort  to involve LCMS districts, congregations and mission-active people to begin cross-cultural ministries throughout North America.

Outreach Ministry partners with districts in helping congregations share the Gospel with the unchurched in their communities by providing encouragement, resources and networking. And LCMS Black Ministry provides spiritual and material resources for the nourishment of faith of black Lutherans and for evangelism in black communities.

A pioneer in radio and television work, the Synod operates the world's oldest religious radio station, KFUO, headquartered in St. Louis, Mo. Its program, "The Lutheran Hour," produced by the Synod's International Lutheran Laymen's League (LLL), has been aired in North America since 1930. The Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML), which came into being in 1942, serves as the Synod's auxiliary for women and has been a leader in supporting missionary outreach in many areas.
