Assists Infant, Child Life-Saving

National Safety Council President and CEO to Retire,
Leaves a Legacy of Strong Leadership, Chairman Says

Itasca, IL - National Safety Council President and CEO Alan McMillan today announced his retirement, effective February 15. McMillan has served the National Safety Council for more than 15 years. Initially a member of the Council’s Board of Directors, McMillan was named NSC Executive Vice President in 1995 and elected President and CEO in 2001.

National Safety Council Names Winners of Radon Poster Contest
Held with U.S. EPA, National Contest Urges Young People to Promote Home Safety

Chicago, IL - The National Safety Council has named the winners of its 2008 National Radon Poster Contest, conducted in partnership with the United States Environmental Protection Agency. First-place winner is Sara Garcia, an eighth grader at Hollywood Academy of Arts & Science in Hollywood, Florida; second-place winner is Daniel Carr, a sixth grader at Carr Homeschool in Tampa, Florida; and third-place winner is Jill Bisig, an eighth grader at Guthrie Junior High School in Guthrie, Oklahoma.

Day & Zimmermann’s Joseph J. Ucciferro Elected Chairman,
National Safety Council Board of Directors

Chicago, IL - Joseph J. Ucciferro, president and CEO of Philadelphia-based Day & Zimmermann’s Commercial and Public Sector, was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors for the National Safety Council at the Council’s 95th Annual Congress & Expo being held here. Ucciferro succeeds Ather Williams, Jr., of Johnson & Johnson, to the two-year term.

ExxonMobil’s Michael F. Henderek Named Vice Chairman of National Safety Council Board of Directors

Chicago, IL - The National Safety Council announced the election of Michael F. Henderek to the position of Vice Chairman of its Board of Directors during the Council’s 95th Annual Congress & Expo being held here. Henderek, safety program manager for Irving, Texas-based Exxon Mobil Corporation, will serve a two-year term on the Council’s principal governing body providing oversight of fiduciary and strategic affairs.

Americans’ Pessimistic View of Accident Prevention Poses Hurdle to Reducing Injuries

Chicago, IL - Nearly one in every three Americans believes nothing can be done to prevent accidental injuries, posing a major obstacle to national efforts to reverse escalating injury trends in the United States, according to a national survey of American attitudes on safety issues released today by the National Safety Council at its annual safety and health meeting here.

National Safety Council Renews Alliance with Mine Safety and Health Administration

Chicago, IL - The National Safety Council (NSC) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) announced that they will renew an alliance to decrease injury and death in the United States mining industry. The alliance between the NSC and MSHA, in effect until 2009, collaborates on the development of safety and health programs for the mining industry as well as educational outreach to the public.

Chicago, IL - As part of a national effort to reverse escalating injury trends through innovative community and grassroots safety efforts, the World Health Organization today officially designated the National Safety Council leader of its “Safe Communities” United States initiative at the Council’s annual safety and health meeting here. In its role, the Council will provide support and guidance for American communities pursuing the WHO “Safe Community” designation.

President Bush Proclaims September 16-22, 2007
NATIONAL FARM SAFETY AND HEALTH WEEK

Peosta, IA - Agriculture continues to rank as one of the most dangerous occupations in North America. According to the National Safety Council, there were 703 deaths and 90,000 disabling injuries attributed to agriculture in 2005. President Bush has issued a proclamation declaring September 16 – 22, 2007 as National Farm Safety and Health Week. This year’s theme for Farm Safety & Health Week is, “It’s easier to bury a tradition than a child.”

September is National Preparedness Month

In time for National Preparedness Month, the National Safety Council has produced a series of radio and broadcast public service announcements to urge emergency preparedness among American families. The announcements stress the importance of using portable generators safely in the wake of power loss from a hurricane or tornado – an especially relevant message with recent news about deaths nationwide from carbon monoxide poisoning. Accidental Deaths Increasing at Alarming Rate Poisonings, Overdoses Seeing Greatest Gains

Itasca, IL – Accidental deaths in the United States are rising at an alarming rate, more than 20 percent over a 10-year period, reaching 113,000 deaths in 2005, according to the latest data available. The National Safety Council (NSC) warns that at the current rate, the nation’s all-time high of 116,385 accidental deaths, set in 1969, could be surpassed in the next few years.
