I went to my OBGYN when I planned on getting pg, but your family doctor is fine too. They will likely test you for std's and maybe some other bloodwork, they will ask you your family medical history, etc - kind of like a physical. I would go on prenatal vitamins before you conceive to build up these nutrients in your body - particularly folic acid which is most critical in the first trimester. You need to get enough of that one before you even know you are pregnant. I would ask your OB his or her philosophies on anything important to you - like c-section rates, likelihood that this doctor will actually deliver or whether another OB in the same practice might. It's really depends on what is important to you. Get a good pregnancy resource book or go to www.babycenter.com - either should have a comprehensive list of things to think about and discuss with your doctor before you conceive.

I would see an OB/GYN. This means they are good with "female stuff", and "delivering babies." They can help you with any problems, planning for pregnancy, all the way through delivery. many family doctors won't deliver babies anymore.

Questions, ask about hours they are open, or how to reach in emergencies. Ask about whether they will induce, C-section rate.

Make sure these are all close to your opinions.

The same with a pediatrician. Breastfeeding, co-sleeping, vaccines, etc, needs to match with your opinions, or you'll dread trips and not trust the dr.

I would see ob. That way you only have to be used to him or her down there.
