My daughter has some kind of ear fungus. Does anyone know............?

I brought her to the Dr. today for "ear pain", which is not uncommon with my children. When her pediatrician looked in her ear, he looked a little confused, saying she has some kind of fungus growing inside of her ear. He said it looks similar to cauliflower, and asked if she had been swimming. Which she has been swimming in our pool. Her said that she needed to go see an ENT, because he didn't feel comfortable treating her. She has an appointment tomorrow morning at a specialist. Has anyone ever experienced this? The inner ear is very enclosed and moist (if not cleaned regularly), it could be a number of fungi.

Medically, this condition is called Chronic Otitis Externa. This condition is often caused by an allergy to fungus. The ear canal is a warm, dark, damp place and fungus often grows there. Antibiotics are ineffective and the condition has been known to last for years. Over the counter medicines, lotrimin and tinactin solution used two to four times a day, can be helpful. However, the best treatment I have found is filling the ear canal with an anti-fungal cream. Painting the ear canal with gentian violet dye is also effective but this dye should not get into the middle ear because of possible ototoxicity. The dye also stains and thus one must be careful in its application. The ear must also be cleaned by an Ear Doctor. Treatment may last for months and relapses are common. The capability of the ear to make wax often does not return and this may predispose to the recurrences. In general dyes and acid mixtures (antiseptics) should not be allowed to get into the middle ear.

It's called Swimmer's Ear, and is caused by not drying your ears off after getting out of water and not letting the water out of them, which builds pressure in the ear, causing "ear pain". Hope I helped!

Yikes, that sounds terrible. No I've never heard of/had anything like this, but you could search like webmd or something. Just go to the appointment with the specialist and go from there. Good luck.

It's probably nothing. Most ear infections are caused by infected water coming in contact with the ear drum. Nothing to worry about.
