DJ Star, who was fired from Power 105 after some remarks about a rival's child, will be coming back to radio stations. While publicists for the DJ, born Troi Torain, would not disclose where he'll be headed (not before tomorrow press conference, at least), the Daily News reports that it will probably be WNYZ, which is 87.7FM: "Its current format is Russian popular music, but with the hiring of Star, it will reportedly switch to... more ›

The Reggae Carifest set to happen at Randall's Island this Saturday may get the plug pulled. amNewYork reports that Power 105 withdrew its sponsorship in response to two artists on the bill having anti-gay language in their songs. The artists, Buju Banton and Bounty Killer, have a history of inflammatory lyrics. Banton's song "Boom Bye Bye" speaks of burning and shooting gay men, while Bounty Killer's song "Another Level" suggests drowning them. The Dancehall reggae artists are part of a long history that genre has in advocating anti-gay violence. more ›

The OSA (Open Space Alliance) has been working with the Parks Dept and between two community planning sessions, surveying at a concert and at McCarren's track & field they have surveyed 500 people. They also have their own outlet for your opines available online here. Those looking for more concerts will be disappointed to learn that this summer will likely be the last of the pool parties - the NY Press reports:

The mayor’s money has pool advocates confident that these large, loud concerts will soon be a thing of the past. “It’s not going to be the concert venue that it is now,” notes Joseph Vance of the Open Space Alliance, an organization expected to partner with the Parks Department for the renovation and subsequent administration of McCarren Pool. “There will be a pool with water in it,” he adds. more ›

There have been murmurs of Galapagos moving from its current space for a while now. The Burg even did an entire episode about saving it. From that show: more ›

We honestly didn’t expect to love internet sitcom The Burg as much as we do. “Making fun of hipsters…so original,” we thought. But you know what, it’s a really good show, and it “works” somehow. With music by local bands playing in the background, the show is a great snapshot of Brooklyn (even if it’s a small, hilarious, thumbnail photo). more ›

Yesterday was one of the first shows of the summer at McCarren Park Pool. We headed over there to check out the venue, and of course the show. We'll have a review up of Les Savy Fav later on, for now we wanted to give you a look at what the venue is like incase you didn't get over there. more ›

This summer there's a series of (expensive) concerts going on at McCarren Park Pool in Brooklyn. The site has been closed since 1984, and last year started undergoing renovations. Recently we received the following email from an unhappy local: more ›

If you like quiet music, you can't beat the CMJ-sponsored lineup at Living Room tonight (Tuesday). Jose Gonzalez, making his U.S. debut, is a superstar in his home country of Sweden. You'll know why if you listen to his songs at Myspace. Doveman plays the show too. You might remember them from their appearance at Gothamist's Movable Hype and BroolynVegan's pre-CMJ concert. Up-and-comers Mike Wexler and Emm Gryner are also on the amazing (and amazingly cheap) bill. If that's all too laid back, there's always the faster and louder show right door at Pianos where Other Passengers continue their residency with special guest Saints & Lovers. Run upstairs between bands to see whats going on at Cross Pollination. It's free. more ›

The NY Post reports that the MTA is removing a LED advertising screen from the R/W subway entrance at Cortlandt Street, after Assemblyman Scott Stringer said it would be disrespectful to have a screen so close to Ground Zero. Stringer said, "We can now ensure the anniversary of 9/11 can be commemorated with dignity." Gothamist believes in commemorating September 11 with dignity and it's great that the screen at Cortlandt was removed, but how is that different from the other advertisements in the area - including the other LED screens in the nearby blocks? Stringer, who represents the Upper West Side, has been railing against these screens since last year. He has even formed a website to inform his constituents of the stop-the-LED-screens campaign, Stop MTA, and gotten the screen at 86th and Broadway removed. Stringer, we're looking to you to battle the MTA and Clear Channel's outdoor division to get the screen taken out one by one - except the ones that give error messages, because those are kind of cool in this post-apocalyptic, overloaded-technoloical society way. more ›

Starting this week in New York City, Citigroup Security and Investigative Services will begin regular patrols accompanied by security trained dogs. Clear Channel said it was "happy to help to help Project Billobard get their message to the more than 1.5 million people who pass through Times Square each day." To see some of the 1.5 million, check out these Earth Cams of Times Square. more ›

Anti-war messages are important and, frankly, Gothamist would like to see more of them. But, oddly enough, we understand a business's decision not to have a 69' by 44' political message greeting its guests. Clear Channel has offered Project Billboard a new space, but PB wants to keep the case in court. Do you think Project Billboard should accept a new placement, or keep fighting Clear Channel? And the Christina Aguliera billboard (which will be in Times Square) from non-partisan, voter-registration group Declare Yourself is pretty S&M-ish.; more ›

HR was so busy yesterday! Howard Stern was fired from Clear Channel radio stations and then it was the boardroom massacre on The Apprentice. There was nothing better than seeing callow Nick and annoying Amy get canned (at least Nick said thank you - Amy just freaked out and left) - except for feeling validated in thinking Omarosa is an idiot. If anyone could lose a rock star (and, honey, Jessica Simpson ain't a rock star), of course Omarosa would be the one to figure out how. Poor Kwame, but you choose, you lose, man. more ›

The Times reports that UWS residents have gotten rid of the LED signs at subway entrances on Broadway and West 79th and Broadway and 86th. Concerned residents rallied against the MTA for putting the 30" by 60" signs (developing a website, of course, stopmta, the newest critical tool in complaining) because they felt, as Assemblyman Scott Stringer said, "this was advertising pollution at its highest level." Of course, some residents didn't even notice them, while others vehemently hate them, as they signal as "Times Square" –ification of the Upper West Side (god forbid the UWS get a movie theater with stadium seating). The signs will be put somewhere else in the city, as they are part of a $15 million city contract with Clear Channel Entertainment, which includes 800 backlit ads; the new screens were recently rolled out, with 46 currently and 34 more to come. more ›
