Natural Disaster Recovery Program

One-minute broadcasts, designed to help citizens recover from floods, fires, and earthquakes in a safe, healthful manner; address a range of practical issues in a recovery context: recognize and handle household hazardous materials; ensure safe-drinking water; avoid carbon monoxide; and other tips. Selected PSAs are also available in Spanish.

In 1998, National Safety Council and Finger Lakes Production, Inc., of Ithaca, New York, broadcast one-minute radio "emergency disaster recovery updates" throughout disaster areas. The National Safety Council and Finger Lakes Productions, Inc. provided this public service with funding from the Teresa & H. John Heinz III Foundation.

NSC worked directly with California's Office of Emergency Services (OES) to develop and distribute the disaster advisories. OES Director Richard Andrews introduced the advisories and, when appropriate, referred listeners to state and local resources for additional information.
