What if you have both purchased and downloaded illegally?

Downloadable RPGs may be a new fine art. (Score: 0)

I have had limited experience, but view downloadable little games like small run, independent literature or club jazz. They are able to appeal to small market interests, and do so very cost effectively.

I have purchased three little games by Politically Incorrect Game on RPGNOW dot com. Firstly, I very much enjoy the price tag of under ten dollars. Secondly, they were complete yet simple little games that very much reminded me of the games I used to play back in the 1980’s, which usually came in a box with a set of dice. _Hard_Nova_ looks like _Star_Frontiers_ or _Deluxe_Traveller_, while _Ghost_Story_ and _Unbidden_ remind me a lot of early _Chill_ or _Call_of_Cthulhu_.

I am a huge fan of modern RPGs, although the current trend of requiring one or more 256-320 page books at $35 or more a crack makes me a little reluctant to buy a new and unfamiliar game on a whim just to try it out. However, if it’s a $4.00 or $7.50 download, I am much more likely to buy something and read it, and maybe even try running it, just cause it looks interesting.

So what about fair use downloads? I own all the print copies of books that I have downloaded "illegally". It is much easier to haul around the laptop from game to game instead of anywhere from 2-12 books. Plus the laptop has all the DM and player tools so I don't even need to haul around dice paper and pencils (unless the DM requires it).

The pen and paper rpg market is dieing, it's sales figures are slipping every year. I don't think pdfs are the cause but they're definately helping speed up the process.

Soon the rpg industry will almost exclusively be WOTC D&D; and to a lesser degree World of Darkness with everything else pdf. Apart from the above mentioned the quality of art and writing has slipped horribly. this used to be an industry of originality now it's just blatant plagarism. It's sad but all the decent talent, has moved to the video game industry and why should new talent even bother with this market when they pay pennies for amterial because the so called fans of the games are unwilling to pay for quality.

It's sad, but the rpg fans are the ones killing the industry
