Obsidian Portal enters open beta testing |
An Anonymous Reader Reports: Obsidian Portal is a content management site for Dungeons & Dragons and other tabletop role-playing games. Rather than trying to automate the playing of the game, Obsidian Portal provides tools to help facilitate the storytelling. After all, the story is the game.
Every campaign has its own shared space to collaborate and push the story forward. A blog provides a historical view of all the adventures the party has experienced, while a campaign wiki allows the party and GM to collectively build a web of information representing their knowledge of the campaign world. Further, the Game Master has their own private wiki for notes, adventure hooks, devious traps, and all the other tiny details necessary to keep a

The envy of the mischievous, the destructive, and the deranged, the rod of wonder is one of the most chaotic magic items known to exist. EVE: The Exiled is Delayed |
BillBodden Reports: EVE: The Exiled, the first expansion for White Wolf’s sci-fi CCG, EVE: The Second Genesis, has been delayed due to a printer error. A mechanical error resulted in a mis-collation of the booster packs, which upon inspection were deemed unsuitable for release. Release events, originally scheduled for the weekend of July 7, will be rescheduled for early August. White Wolf will continue to honor its offer of a $100 payout, to be split among the top players of any event that hosts twelve or more people. Retailers interested hosting an event should place an

Tannhäuser Video Now Available Online |
BillBodden Reports: Fantasy Flight Games’ Media Division has produced a video for their upcoming Tannhäuser game. Tannhäuser is a skirmish-level miniatures game that tells the story of an Earth where World War Two never ended. Tannhäuser follows the “Army of the Union" in their attempts to track down and stop the Reich's "Obscura Korps", who use a mixture of technology and occult magic to further the cause of the Fatherland. Tannhäuser blends together alternate history, science fiction, and magic to create a wholly original game world.
Fantasy Flight Games has a high-quality video available on their own site here. For those without the ability to view QuickTime files, or who don’t wish to download large files to watch the video, a slightly lower-quality version is now available at YouTube.
Tannhäuser features a double-sided game board featuring two different maps, character cards and counters, and

Patrician Available to the Masses in August |
BillBodden Reports: Mayfair Games has announced the newest title from one of their European partners, Amigo Spiele. Patrician is a family board game for two to five players where each player takes on the role of a master builder competing to create the most opulent towers in all of Italy.
Throughout the Middle Ages, wealthy and influential men and women across Italy wished to prove their importance. They desired a solid, visible symbol of their power and prosperity. So, they built magnificent tower-like buildings: the more influential the family, the taller the towers! But the competition never let up, and if a family should ever lose influence, newer, taller towers quickly appeared.
As a master builder of these "Patrician Towers," you stand ready to profit from the vanity of these patrician families. You will build their towers, adding floor after floor. And when the towers are complete, you will be there to take the credit!
In Patrician, players compete to build the tallest towers in cities across Italy. You must shrewdly accept the building orders of the patrician families to position yourself in the right place at the

GMT Announces September New Releases |
BillBodden Reports: GMT Games announced two new releases for September of 2007, Conquest of Paradise and Asia Engulfed.
Conquest of Paradise is a game of empire building in the "Polynesian Triangle" of the central Pacific Ocean for two, three, or four players. Players explore the unknown ocean around them, hoping to discover the most lucrative island groups, and colonize them. They build canoes and train warriors to create a force to defend their empire, while forging lines of communication with their developing discoveries. Resources are scarce; using them wisely is a key to victory. Investing in exploration widens your empire. Building warriors strengthens your empire. Investing resources into cultural innovations can yield unexpected dividends, like tattooing, hula dancing, surfing, or even the giant moai statues of Easter Island fame.
Previously announced by Phalanx Games (but later returned to the designer when they changed the direction of their game line), Conquest of Paradise is a well-tested, fast-playing design geared to appeal to players who enjoy games like New World, Civilization, and Conquistador. You can learn the game in 10-15 minutes and finish a complete game in

Diana Jones Award Shortlist Announced |
BillBodden Reports: After much debate the shortlist for the seventh annual Diana Jones Award for Excellence in Gaming, covering the year 2006, has been announced.
The Diana Jones Award is given to whatever the Diana Jones Committee believes has best demonstrated 'excellence in gaming' in the previous year. This year the committee has shortlisted three potential winners. In alphabetical order, they are:
• The Great Pendragon Campaign by Greg Stafford (White Wolf) In terms of sheer scope alone, Greg Stafford's Great Pendragon Campaign breaks new ground, presenting almost a century's worth of continuous story with gemlike clarity; in almost fractal fashion, any given year can become its own campaign. Its greatest structural successes are those of Stafford's Pendragon: a superbly compact yet never sketchy adventure format, seamless hard-wiring of characters into setting and continuity, and unprecedented emphasis on epic, generational storytelling. Thematically, it is a triumph of Arthurian art in its own right, the role-playing form's equivalent of Tennyson's 'The Idylls of the King' or Wagner's 'Parsifal'—a brilliant personal engagement with one of the foundation myths of Western fantasy.
• Pieces of Eight by Jeff Tidball (Atlas Games) In Jeff Tidball's Pieces of Eight, each player in the game holds a customizable stack of coins in one hand. This represents a pirate ship, complete with captain, and the players do battle with each other by moving and using the coins in their hands to harm other ships and help their own. It's a perfect example of a game that is simple to learn but fun to play for beginners and long-time gamers alike, it can be played just about anywhere, and it offers layers of customization and strategy found in few games of any kind, as well as an elegance for which all great game designers strive.
• Stefan Pokorny, creator, sculptor and painter of the Master Maze line of miniature terrain from Dwarven Forge. Stefan is a fine artist by trade who has studied extensively in the US and abroad. He holds a Master's Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Hartford and he has taught at recognized fine art schools. For the past 11 years he has been pouring his artistic energies into the creation of the finest miniature terrain in the world—the Master Maze line from his company Dwarven Forge. While his efforts have always garnered much praise, the year 2006 was an especially rewarding year for Stefan and his work. He released three new incredible sets: the Cavernous River and Walls Set, the Cavernous Lake Set and the Medieval Building Set. Each of these is not only an incredible work of art and craftsmanship, but also represents the absolute pinnacle of game accessory quality. They serve to remind everyone of the unmatched artistic work that Stefan has accomplished over the last 11 years.
About the Award The Diana Jones Award was established in 2000 to celebrate the principal of excellence in gaming. Each year the Award is given to the person, company, product, event, trend or item that in the opinion of

Chaotic Launch Delayed |
BillBodden Reports: Pop-culture website ICv2 reports that 4Kids Entertainment has delayed the launch of its Chaotic Trading Card Game until late summer in order to get more time to beta test the "scalability and functionality of the Chaotic website."
Each Chaotic card has an alphanumeric code, which players can upload to the Chaotic website (for free) where they can trade cards and play against online opponents; a fully functional website able to handle a high volume of traffic is clearly needed to make this experience engaging for visitors. The importance of website functionality to the overall marketing plan was also

An Anonymous Reader Reports: First appearing in Marvel Comics’ Strange Tales V1, #89 (October 1961) and widely acknowledged among Jack “King” Kirby’s greatest monster creations, Fin Fang Foom (whose name in his native tongue means, quite literally, “He Whose Limbs Shatter Mountains and Whose Back Scrapes the Sun”) was once believed to be an ancient Chinese dragon when first awakened from his centuries-long slumber, but was ultimately revealed as a Makluan — a race of monstrous, dragon-like alien conquerors! In the modern age, the colossal Foom has faced heroes ranging from the Fantastic Four to Iron Man, ravaging the earth in their epic confrontations, and was so powerful that the fabled Midgard Serpent chose to imitate Foom when entering into battle against the Mighty Thor!
Now, no place on the HeroClix battlefield will be safe when Foom strikes! Sculpted by Brian Dugas and painted by Chris Hart, Fin Fang Foom is a formidable figure with three dials (nearly 50 slots!) full of powers and combat values that will make him a challenge to
