Actually the main reason RPGs aren't mainstream is... shock shock... because no one $#@!&# advertises the damn thing. They expect their products to become popular solely by word of mouth.

The only reason D&D; became as popular as it did back in the 70's/80's is because of all the free... and here's the keyword... ADVERTISING they got through the religious zealots and asinine movies and whatnot.

It's just baffling.

This is a great piont. For years we have paid too much for RPG materials that, although excellently produced, are over done, chopply designed, and even made to be expensive. We are too small a group to pay the infinite moneybags of holding held by the big H. We are a minority in the majority of gamers ( which are in themselves a minority.) I want paperback, I want a variety of unique products, and I want the people behind the products to know what the hell their doing.

I disagree with most of the arguments about overpriced books. There is not a whole lot of profit in producing the high-quality books that WotC makes. Do you have any idea how expensive it is per unit to produce hundreds of full-color glossy 8.5" x 11" pages in a glossy hardcover binding? Think about it. How much did your high school yearbook cost? And how much of it was actually in color, or subsidized by student-sponsored personal pages? Most full-size color books of any kind, non-gaming especially, cost approximately $40-50 retail. That's inflation, which can hardly blamed on WotC. You say overpriced, I say let them make SOME money. Besides, don't forget that if the price is $40, they probably only make $20, and the retailers take the other half. After production costs, they probably net under $7 per book unless they sell it direct off the website.

If you can't afford it, especially with a discount card from Waldenbooks or whatever, just don't buy it.
