As I said when this misconception about "excluding gamer comics" came up on RPG.net:
The eligibility guidelines for periodicals were changed this year because of the addition of the Best Graphic Fiction category. The periodical category was always intended to be for consumer magazines with game content. Knights of the Dinner Table meets that criteria. There are several other gaming periodicals produced in the game industry (such as Games Quarterly Catalog or Comics and Games Retailer) that are excluded from the category because they are trade related publications despite being excellent and useful publications. Dork Tower, as a counter-example, is a periodical in the sense that it comes out "periodically" but the focus of Dork Tower (and Snap Dragons, Nodwick, and several others) is to tell a gaming-related story through a comic. Thus it competes in the Graphic Fiction category.

I know one of the guys from Eden has talked about hiring hookers for the awards committee members. Probably joking, but you never can tell.

"(Palladium comes to mind)."
They cannot get an award for a new game because they have released the same product with different covers for about a decade now. If it didn't win the first time......

Welcome to the wonderful world of the professional award. It happens in every intra-industry award process I've ever seen. Committee members and relationships, especially in a cottage industry like gaming (or even in academics, which I work in), typically determine how the prizes fall moreso than particular brilliance on the publisher's part.

Hey, the Origins Awards do have problems, I won't say no, however, my company is NOT a member of GAMA and we got 4 Origins nominations. Last year we were not members and we got nominated. Same for the year before that too.
And I don't drink :)
