WotC Layoffs Official Statement
Posted 2002-09-05 18:09:55 by damonwhite

Wizards of the Coast realmprotector Reports: We just received in this official comment to GamingReport from WotC's Don Williams on today's events:

September 5, 2002
Wizards of the Coast Statement:

RE: Reorganization

The past two years have been challenging ones for Wizards of the Coast. It is with great sadness that today we must announce some organizational changes. Today’s organizational changes are designed to help drive our business into the future to improve our performance and our long-term profitability.

Unfortunately, some positions have been eliminated. Employees leaving the company will receive a competitive severance program including pay and benefits continuation, career transition services and support.

While these types of moves are always difficult, our competitive industry demands that we operate as efficiently as possible. For example, as part of Hasbro’s U.S. Games Segment, we can take advantage of the leverage afforded by utilizing shared services available across the broader Hasbro organization instead of maintaining duplicate functions at additional expense.

Wizards of the Coast will continue to lead by example in the hobby industry as the worldwide market share leader in the trading card game and tabletop role-playing game categories. We believe that the moves we are making today and throughout the rest of this year will help contribute to our long-term growth and profitability, as we continue to bring to market great games to consumers around the world.

Loren Greenwood
Chief Operating Officer
Wizards of the Coast

Is Loren Greenwood related to Ed Greenwood of FORGOTTEN REALMS fame?

How does laying off the sage improve their performance? Who will update the FAQ or the erratta? Is this the end of Sage Advice?

Do people work better with or without job security? Depends.

One of the running arguments in the group is whether WOTC would be better off releasing staff and contracting out most of the content production.

My opinion is that maintaining a properly motivated and rewarded staff with production incentives will produce both the 'best' and most profitable content. Disciplined management making informed decisions to produce profitable product the consumer needs rather than flashy products a designer might prefer will complete the ideal creative pipeline.

Since there's no way in Hell WOTCBRO works that way anymore (if ever), they might as well contract everything out.

Hasborg needs to really re-evaluate where it's wasting money? I mean, how many different version of Sorry, Monopoly and Trouble do we need? C'mon, give us a break. How much are they paying for those Disney, Lucasfilm and other licenses?

All I know is, when is Peter gonna pick up the WotC RPG line and make it work again?

What in the blue hell is wrong with hasbro that they keep making cuts in WotC, prompting the loss of staff?

It sounds to me like they don't want WotC to make money for them anymore so they can kill it.

Hasbro gutted and destroyed Avalon Hill, so this comes as no surprise to me.

I think the efools release summs up best what is really going on. A product that poor is only released when it is believed the customers are idiots who will buy anything.

Etools is buggy, inaccurate and riddled with errors. As well as inexcusable fatal sofware faults. The price is par with software like Unreal Tournament, or Starcraft. Gamers would not tolerate faults in those products like the ones we are expected to tolerate in etools. The programming for etools is magnitudes less complicated than those products. Etools is a simple databas with front end! This makes it very hard to accept that serious effort was made in the production. The message: we're not worth making the effort for.

I don't know what this means for D&D.; The 3d edition is probably the best RPG I've seen, and I've played since '79. With the core rules out and dozens of small shops making excellent products...nobody would likely miss WOTC if it went away. The only thing they really had to offer was sufficient financial backing to make good software-products to support the game...and they botched that opportunity. Likewise the role of Avalon Hill has been replaced by several excellent boutique firms e.g. Clash of Arms. If Hasbro had sense they will let it go.

Excellent games will continue to crop up out the fertile imagination of gamers. *New* games are always too risky for Hasbro. Simply put, Hasbro can never *lead* the market. It must always follow, trailing along, buying up what is successful *after* it has succeeded.

To me the statement says: "We've learned that good games are hard to make and we don't work that hard. We are *efficient* not competitive."

As all good and well as all this talk is 1 BIG problem still remains.

Washington State law prohibats companies from hiring people freelance up to 1 year after termination for the same department (blame it on microsoft, they used to layoff people then rehire them as freelance so they don't have to pay benefits). This is why Sean K. Reynolds, although he continues to do stuff for Wizards.com, hasn't started any new projects since Races of Faerun which was completed long before her got laid off.

The point is, all the people, espically the ENTIRE Star Wars staff won't be able to work for R&D; for up to 1 year. What the heck are we and they going to do for the next 365 days?!

Good Luck to all the folks who were laid off and are going to receive "career transistion services and support."

I was one of Wotc's laid off employees and they never provided any career transition services and support even though I received a letter from the company stating I would. Unfortunately, it was a big lie.

My two cents,

I sympathise with anyone that loses their job, end of story.

However, Wizards of the Coast are a Microsoft-like monopoly that has got far too used to charging extortionate prices for its product.

As a D&D; player of some 25 years, I bought the manuals for D&D; Third Edition because they were reasonable priced - however, how you can deign to charge $35+ for the average D20 rulebook is beyond me!

You are just a monopoly that has got far too big for its boots and is now paying the price. ..

Release good quality material and charge a reasonable amount for it and people will flock to buy it.

I MEAN GEEZ, WE ARE ROLEPLAYERS, WHO MUCH MONEY DO YOU THINK WE HAVE? HOW MANY RPG'S DO YOU THINK WE CAN REALLY BUY A YEAR? WELL IF IT MAKES YOU FEEL ANY BETTER I THINK I BOUGHT SOME OVER PRICED DICE FROM YOUR MISSION VIEJO LOCATION BEFORE IT CLOSED.
