New Dungeons & Dragons 2 Movie News
Posted 2004-04-06 15:28:26 by damonwhite

D&D Official News Damon White Reports: A small bit of news on the upcoming D&D; 2 Movie, from Variety:

"Studio Hamburg's international production arm WorldWide Pictures (WWP) is partnering with Joel Silver's Silver Pictures on the sequel to "Dungeons and Dragons" and with Keystone Entertainment on family drama "Chestnut: Hero of Central Park."

Warner Bros. has picked up "Dungeons and Dragons 2" for distribution

Stateside and in selected international territories. Gerry Lively is helming the pic, which is to be shot in Europe this year.

Miramax will handle U.S. distribution of Robert Vince's "Chestnut," about two orphans and their canine pal who become local New York heroes overnight. The film was shot in Vancouver last year.

Pics follow WWP's debut feature last year, Irish comedy "The Boys from County Clare," which is being handled internationally by Overseas Film Group/First Look Media.

Launched in 2001, WWP utilizes a private investment fund to back English-lingo projects budgeted at between $5 and $20 million that already have a foreign sales company and a U.S. distributor attached in addition to a bankable minimum revenue guarantee."

Let's wait and see what this 2nd film is going to be about, which BTW, I'm hoping they WILL NOT continue the 1st film's storyline.

You know a sequel is going to suck when the guy who spent HIS LIFE trying to get the original film off the ground because of an obsession (Courtney Solomon) is barely involved with it.
I hate to be hard on the guy since the first film was clearly a labor of love, but as we all experienced...it was a pretty damn sucky labor of love. VERY sucky in fact.
The only hope for a decent film to be made of material from D&D; is for it to be professionally produced on a budget of at least $90-100 million; not just farted out in an attempt to maximize profits by spending as little as possible on the production. A LOT could be done with a well written D&D; movie, and the world is so diverse the storyline could be 100% original and still be cool. It's unfortunate that the fate of this film license rests in hands that are so mindnumbingly stupid.

Oh dear god, no. The first one was the worst movie I have ever had the misfortune to start to see (I gave up after twenty minutes or so, fortunately it was on TV so I didn't pay anything for it). The bald freak with the blue lipstick was just... mindblowingly terrible. I don't know what the hell he was supposed to be.

You can make an excellent movie for a fairly cheap price (say, $5 to $20 million dollars) and not have anyone know. The problem lies in the script -- it was horrible. But, at the same time, there are probably some campaigns out there that would look a lot like the first D&D; movie.

Considering that it's helmed and written by entirely different people, don't be surprised if they don't call it D&D2; but Dungeons & Dragons: The Inserted Subtitle.

Gerry Lively has worked on movies as a cinematographer, director and actor since 1981.

He doesn't have a great filmography, but some of the movies on that list did not suck. A good sign, and hopefully on this small project we will get to see the fruits of his decades of experience.

In the history of film, I can think of no other film that was as grandiose a failure as Dungeons & Dragons. It was painful to watch. The acting was pathetic. The story wa incompressible and the editing was heinous. It was simply wrong. There wasn't a single redeeming thing about it. Jeremy Irons should have been removed from the Screen Actors Guild for being a part of that crap. My disgust with the film is so great that I'm having a hard time right now articulating how magnitude of its abhorrence, And so, they’ve decided to make a sequel. Will I go see this film? I can't help but say yes. If for no other reason to appreciate the depths of mediocrity.

Well at least Courtney "flame on" Solomon isn't involved...That assblower needs shot.....

The second one needs to be either good to really good, or abysmally bad like the first.

I laughed long and hard while watching the D&D; movie. I heard it was bad before going in and that help a lot. Of course, I did not laugh when the movie tried to be funny.

Mind you, if the 2nd D&D; movie is only mediocre as opposed to horrible like the first it won't be worth seeing.

The original "Dungeons & Dragons" movie ruined the franchise in the movie-making aspect of things. There will be constant references to the original which was one of the worst films ever made. I think they should abandon the name or at least modify it, instead of going for the sequel title approach.

Hmm. I hope they don't make it a sequal, but redo from start. The only thing that was good about the first flic was the name. Hell, the only D&D-like; thing about the first flic was the name.

If that new movie will be anything like D&D;, It will almost be enough for me. A half-decent plot and I'm happy.

I don't want some world that noone cares for this time (and especially no Star Wars Rip-Off councils), but one world that D&D-Gamers; might recognize. Maybe one or two scenes in the film where a name is mentioned that we know.
I don't want all spells to use this magic fairy dust they used. I won't watch the movie with the rulebooks beside me and see if they used the correct components, but a little diversity please.
I don't want a lowly thief outfight the greatest swordsman of the whole world. If it has to be a rogue, he should outsmart the bastard. Or something else that is appropriate.
I don't want stupid dragons. This isn't dark eye, this is D&D.; They aren't animals, but among the most intelligent beings in D&D; (they're even in the name). Rest goes for the other monsters - they should at least loosely resemble the beasts from the game they're ripping off, and not just in looks
4 Words: No. Wrinkled. Old. Elf

And if they're going to introduce an annoying character again, I hope he dies in the first couple of minutes, or someone has to bleed.

PLEEEAAASE! They're just going to take the same basic plot from the first movie, make the characters more powerful, then they'll have to make the foes more powerful to make it a challenge for our heroes. If the fans don't like the changes instead of fixing them in any real way they'll reshoot the movie around the problems. Then the whole thing will get rereleased in time for Christmas.

OK the first one sucked major balls. On the other hand it did have a trully game related event. How many of us have played with a thief that make the mistake of thinking that he can take on the world at some point and gets slaguthered. I was almost shot for the amount of laughing I did in the theater when I watched the fight between Marlon's character and Demoral...no it was Damnitall..oh the bald guy with the bad make-up. Of course I was seeing it in an area that was prodominatly black and they did not understand the reason for my outburst.
And let's face it how many times have we thought as we trudged through the mall with our S.O. about saying that line that embodies our fondish wish.
"If I ain't drinkin! You ain't shoppin!"
Well I will probably go and see it, let the suffering begin.
Peace

Here's how to make a good D&D; movie....(Score: 0)
by An Anonymous Reader on Jul 04, 2004 - 06:08 PM
First off, forget the first movie ever existed. The filmmakers need to approach this film as if it were the first. If they do that, they can START the long process of making a good movie.

Second, they need money. You CANNOT make decent swords-and-sorcery films without a good budget. In my opinion, $50 million would be the absolute minimum required to make a good D&D; film provided that it used the budget wisely.

Third, get REAL filmmakers. D&D1; was concocted and made by a lot of people who knew nothing about filmmaking and had no established reputations. Crew members who knew what they were doing basically had to run the show to make the newbies look like they were doing a job. It's great if the filmmakers understand the source of all this (or even enjoy playing RPGs), but understanding filmmaking is more important.

Fourth, write a very good story that emphasizes plot. Better yet, work on licensing an already established storyline from other a scenario or, say, a D&D; based video game.

With a good cast and the passion to make something work, this could be outstanding. The information here, though, is that we have a small production that will likely get a very small budget. This WILL NOT work. It's been proven zillions of times that you simply cannot make a successful film with this kind of attitude. They may indeed make a small profit, but with just a little initial investment, a film company could give this idea a real chance. It could easily emerge from the shadow of the original film and take on it's new life, rather than just go into the straight-to-video crap pile, which is where this one is undoubtedly headed.
