Night Web Producer - Editorial

The Chronicle of Higher Education, the leading source for news of colleges and universities, seeks a dynamic journalist with strong news judgment to serve as a night Web producer for its Web site. The producer will manage multimedia features, update Web pages, prepare e-mail newsletters, and create original online content.

Duties include:

  • Assisting the night news desk in producing our daily e-mail newsletters and adding new content to the site
  • Producing podcasts, videos, and audio slideshows
  • Working with reporters to plan multimedia projects

The job requires working Sunday through Thursday nights. A strong interest in online media is a must. Experience with audio editing and HTML preferred.

Web Developer (LAMP), New Media

The Chronicle of Higher Education seeks a talented and committed Web Developer for its New Media Department. The Web Developer will be responsible for the building and maintenance of web applications that interact with databases across multiple websites. The ideal candidate will have experience with building high-traffic websites.

Knowledge of building websites using PHP, MySQL, Apache and Linux is essential. Familiarity with PHP-based Content Management Systems, Shell scripting, Perl, JavaScript, DOM, CSS, Pear and/or LDAP is preferred. Two-three years of related experiences is required. It is vital to be self-motivated, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, have the ability to work in a collaborative deadline-driven environment, and pay close attention to detail. This position is located in Washington D.C. and candidates must be able to work locally.

The Chronicle of Higher Education and its sister publication, The Chronicle of Philanthropy are the leading sources for news, career searches and community discussion in higher education and philanthropy, respectively. The New Media department supports the Web design and maintenance of the company Web sites, most notably, www.chronicle.com and www.philanthropy.com.

FileMaker Pro Database Developer - New Media

The Chronicle of Higher Education seeks a qualified FileMaker Pro database developer with at least three years of development experience in FileMaker Pro 7, 8, or 9 and at least one year of working with 8 or 9. Relevant experience in MS Access will be considered.

This position will be responsible for defining, creating and maintaining a wide variety of cross platform FileMaker databases and systems for our editorial and business departments. The ideal candidate will possess strong relational design, advanced scripting and design skills. Prior experience in print and online publishing will be helpful, but not necessary. The position requires direct communication with technical and non-technical staff, therefore candidates will need to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Candidates with additional skills in HTML, XML, SQL, JDBC/ODBC, and/or project management are preferred.

Online Marketing Associate

The Chronicle of Higher Education seeks an Online Marketing Associate to join our growing Communications department. The successful candidate will assist in creating, coordinating, and administering online marketing programs and specialized Web offerings for our advertising clients. Responsibilities include:

  • Using a combination of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Flash to design and maintain specialized Web sites and online surveys
  • Assisting with the implementation of new online marketing programs
  • Creating and executing outbound e-mail campaigns through several different service providers such as MDR and Talisma.
  • Tracking and reporting on the effectiveness of all online marketing activities using such tools as Google Analytics, DoubleClick DART, Talisma Analytics, and Web-site logs and other key performance metrics
  • Troubleshooting and modifying rich-media advertising campaigns

Requirements for this position include strong familiarity with the standard Microsoft Office programs; the ability to quickly master new software tools like the ones referenced above; and outstanding customer service and interpersonal skills. We seek an experienced multitasker who has the patience and diplomacy to juggle multiple projects for a variety of clients in a deadline-driven environment. You should also have demonstrated experience with e-marketing, e-commerce, and Web analytics, as well as proficient knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Flash. Familiarity with Photoshop is preferred. A wordsmith with a flair for copy is a plus.
