DLR safety
DLR stations have been designed to be open with clear lines of sight. Frequent services ensure that passengers never have long to wait for a train, which all have a member of staff on board.
CCTV
Closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) are installed at every station and are monitored by staff in the DLR Control Centre. CCTV is also located on board trains for the protection and security of both passengers and staff and is primarily used as a deterrent against anti-social and criminal behaviour.
Passenger Alarms
DLR stations are well lit and passenger alarms are located on every station platform for use in an emergency. If you feel you are in danger, activate the passenger alarm and you will be linked to a member of DLR staff in the Control Centre. Passenger alarms with voice intercom connected to the Control Centre are also installed in all of our lifts. Every train has a clearly identified alarm button by each set of doors, which alerts the Passenger Service Agent that assistance is required.
To avoid a potentially serious incident in the event that something or someone falls onto the track, every platform is equipped with train stop button, which when pressed will halt moving trains moving in the immediate area.
Staff
Every train is supervised by a Passenger Service Agent who is equipped with a mobile radio and can call immediately for assistance. Part of the Passenger Service Agent's role is to walk throughout the train providing information and assistance.
A team of Travel Safe Officers (TSOs) patrol stations and trains during late hours. Working with British Transport Police, TSOs carry out station checks, identify and secure unattended items and report and act on breaches of DLR's byelaws. In the course of their duties, they also report ASBO breaches and criminal activity. Please approach a TSO if you need assistance during your journey.
In addition to DLR staff and TSOs, the railway is patrolled by British Transport Police, both uniformed and in plain clothes. The BTP are responsible for policing the railway and will prosecute those committing criminal offences.
DLR has achieved Secure Station awards for all its stations, reaching national standards in station, staff and passenger security. An ongoing assessment is in place with BTP and the Department of Transport to ensure that stations continue to maintain this high standard.
Safety advice from DLR and BTP
Please be aware of your own personal safety when traveling. We advise that:- You take care when getting on and off the train
- You avoid running for a train, which can result in trips and falls
- If you drop anything onto the track, you never try to retrieve it. Always contact a member of staff of assistance
- You conceal your mobile phone and/or MP3 player especially when exiting a station. Using the phones vibrate facility, will avoid attracting attention until you feel it is safe to take calls
- If at any time you do feel insecure, use the Passenger Alarm which connects you to a member of staff
- If you see an unattended package or bag, do not touch it but notify a member of staff or the police immediately. Please keep your own belongings with you at all times
- You avoid using earphones for music etc, while on the move, especially when walking to/from the station. They can restrict your hearing and prevent you from being aware of what is happening around you
- If you take a cab from the station, only use a reputable taxi or mini cab company. Do not accept lifts from strangers or any unlicensed taxi service. Text "HOME" to 60835 and the telephone numbers of your two nearest licensed minicab operators will be sent to your mobile phone.
