Transport for London

Bus lanes

bus-lane-car London's bus network is one of the biggest in the world, with 8,000 buses, 700 bus routes, and over six million passenger journeys made every weekday.

Raising road user awareness of bus lane restrictions through effective enforcement has resulted in clearer bus lanes and an improved and more reliable bus service. This has encouraged more people to travel by bus, with usage up by 40 per cent in the past five years. In turn, this has helped to reduce congestion on London's roads.

To deter drivers from driving, stopping or parking in bus lanes during operational hours, a £120 penalty charge is issued to those who do.

Cyclists are allowed to use bus lanes, and their usage has increased greatly. A study considering the effects of allowing motorcyclists to use certain bus lanes was published in March 2008 and is available in our bus lane study section.
