Abreviations

For transcribers of the 1911 Census, we'd like to suggest that you use the following abbreviations. We feel these abbreviations do not detract from the transcription as they only reduce the commonly used words to a shorter form (e.g., Daughter to D). The abbreviations also help transcribers, as they reduce the amount of keystrokes that have to be entered. Note that "ng" is used repeatedly by the enumerators to mean "Not Given".

If you do not wish to use these abbreviations or a suitable abbreviation is not listed below, please try to transcribe exactly the information in the various census columns. If substantial a full term is found frequently, an official abbreviation will be determined and posted here. When submitted spreadsheets are converted to PDF format for placement onto the AFHS website, the abbreviations will be be used.
