The Alberta Family Histories Society, based in Calgary Alberta, is a non-profit organization formed in 1980 to promote and encourage family history research.

Here are some fast-track key pages on our site that will help the newcomer get acquainted with what the AFHS and it's website have to offer:

  • General Information Links
  • When's the next meeting? We have a ton of meetings for all kinds of specialized interests. Our homepage features upcoming themed events, but do consult our online calendar for the complete listing of possibilities.
  • Contact Us - volunteers, board members, Special Interest Group leaders, etc.
  • Dist-Gen - a free listserv to ask/answer questions and talk about family history
  • Membership - a long list of reasons why you would benefit from joining; online membership fee payment now available
  • Getting Started - a 16-chapter online book outlining the do's and don'ts of starting to do family history research
  • What's New - when we post new links on our site (and we have over 10,000), here's where you can find a copy of the new ones - and where you can find them once they're no longer "new" to us.
  • Recommended websites for researching English, Scottish, Irish, Italian, German, Canadian, etc. origins
  • Special Interest Groups - a great way to meet folks who share your geographic or technical genealogical interest
  • Queries - if you have a formal query, our volunteers will pursue answers for a small fee
  • Data! - the AFHS is very committed to extracting and publishing data from cemetery and other sources. See our long list of online (free) and published indexes

Apart from all the above, we are happy to say that we maintain a close and co-operative relationship with the Family History Center of the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS), the Alberta Genealogical Society, and other organizations. We're always interested in exchanging information and ideas.

Our Canadian Genealogical Projects Register is an unparalelled tool (we won a major award for that work).

Visitors are welcome to drop in on a meeting and see how our services/programs fit their needs.
