School of Culture and Communication Postgraduate Work in Progress day
All postgraduate research students are required to make at least one public presentation of their work each year. This could occur in a number of ways, such as at a postgraduate seminar, a conference, at the Arts Faculty Research Student Colloquium or one of the 'work in progress' days held around the University.
The School of Culture and Communication's annual Postgraduate Work in Progress (WIP) Day is held twice yearly - in July and October. The Call for Papers will be sent out one month prior.
Work in Progress Day is designed as an opportunity for postgraduates to share their work in a conference-style setting and to hear about the research of others. All the School's PhD and Masters students are invited to present papers and participate in discussion. The 20-minute papers may take the form of a self-contianed conference-style paper or a 'thesis outline' that sketches the main issues and arguments of the research project.
Work in Progress Day:
- enhances dialogue between staff and students
- helps students crystallise some of the issues in their work
- marks an important milestone in students' progress
- provides an opportunity to gather together as an intellectual and solical community and celebrate the wonderful work and achievements of our postgraduate students;
- and provide practice and experience in the arts of oral presentation and public speaking.
The days conclude with drinks and a launch of Public Works: Postgraduate Completions, Publications and Presentations, a publication that lists all theses completed, essays and books published and conference papers presented by postgraduate students since the last Work in Progress Day.
A call for papers will be emailed to all postgraduates later in the year.
