School of Culture and Communication Postgraduate Welcome Scheme

The postgraduate Buddy Program is an orientation initiative that introduces new postgraduates to current students working within the same discipline. The aim is to welcome these new postgraduates to the School, the University and, in some cases, the city!

Postgraduates who have may have missed orientation, started mid-semester or would like to get to know the School better are also invited to find an appropriate buddy and make contact themselves.

It’s quite informal; new students just need to email one of the postgraduates on the list who have generously offered their time for this program: they could choose to meet for coffee and a chat, a University tour or tag along to a reading group. Whatever you’re most comfortable with. It’s a great way for new students to meet other postgraduates and get some information on postgraduate life here that may not come through more formal channels.

Alternatively, if you would like to participate in the Buddy Program as a ‘welcomer’, please email one of the members of the Postgraduate Association: http://www.culture-communication.unimelb.edu.au/SCC-pg-association.html

In addition, SCCPA has implemented the new online skills bank. The skills bank is a means of connecting postgraduates who are having specific difficulties with those who can help. The potential of this project is enormous, as each student has a skill to offer. Not only does this discard the need of any hierarchical divide between students, it also offers ALL postgraduates within SCC a place to go and access information and skills.

The aim of this project is to establish within the postgraduate community a site that can provide a solution to common postgraduate obstacles whilst encouraging an interactive community. For more information regarding the skills bank, download the pdf from the website http://www.culture-communication.unimelb.edu.au/SCC-pg-association.html
